And to add that 28mile wreck has produced some banner catches for me at night aswell as 19fathom lump.I would use bluefish fillets for bait aswell as A whole bluefish (med-to small size is best)along with mackeral fillets.If bluefish or dogfish are present it may become impossible to keep whole mackeral and mackeral fillets on your line this to some becomes frustrating,to combat that use whole bluefish and whole bluefish if not bitten will last the whole night (should still work bait in and out though) as mako will sometimes be attracted to the moving bait and may follow your bait and float to the boat thats where A pich bait comes into play. ps.I almost forgot using bunker chum works best!(for us anyway!)

we use to find the biggest bird we could let it drift out and crank like hell it worked somtimes and then threw him the pitch bait. also the snapper blues like a pound to 2 pounds ive found that when something bites them they always have an attitude problem. aslo when rigging whole mackeral stick the leader threw his rear so the hook is flush then take the leader threw his mouth and so his mouth shut. for a little more sent cut the mackerals belly open put wet cat food in it then sew it up. hope this helps james

Back when we used to use balloons in the daytime and with little light sticks in them at night (we haven't used balloons for many years now, so we don't have this problem anymore, nor do we hook up blue sharks or big sharks on little gear or little ones, which many of today's fish are, on big gear), we solved the blue shark eating the balloons problem by attaching the balloons to the running line with a piece of light string about two or three feet long. That way, if a blue ate a balloon, he didn't bite off or damage the running line. Worked great for us and I hope it does for those who still use balloons.

This also applies to balloons used when night swordfishing, where we do still use them.

That trick is old and it isn't even in the new shark chumming book - but a heckuva a lot of other new stuff is.
