As I drove home from work today the radio news was about a Coast Guard search for a fishermen. They found his 21 foot boat last night, motor still running and now they are searching for him.

and thats what buddy boats are for, and being very careful about what days you make the run. I have been out there in nasty weather on bigger boats, and I don't take a chance in mine. My avatar picture was taken 60 miles off, and if its not like that or close to it I stay inshore. If I can't run wot it just takes too damn long to get there.

As far as the guy who thinks 21's shouldn't be offshore, that's absurd.

There is no distance that is too far for a 21', there are just two things that must be present #1 Enough Fuel to get home, #2 A brain.

I've been 90 miles offshore in the NE caynons on my 21' and would do it again, there are a lot of things that have to come together for it to happen but the boat doesn't know how far offshore it is and it's only as dangerous as the operator is incompetent.

As far as OI. Dead bait will outfish artificials 10-1 out of there. Sea witches with hoos are your best bet.

Zummie -As far as taking a little boat out there, Well, I guess I'm not right in the head anyway. I work high voltage powerlines, up to 19,900 volts, everyday, wearing rubber gloves, and I love my job So I'm not going to quit fishing offshore cause you say its dangerous. Anyway I am planning to get a bigger boat. Not as big as yours, but I have been looking at a 23 Regulator.

Everyone else -Thanks again for all the advise. I plan on getting some blue and white seawitches and Ilanders and making things simple. I also have every intention on learning to rig by watching videos and going with someone experienced. Not sure If I am going to go on a charter, hire a local captain/mate to go with me on my boat, or go with someone local who knows what they are doing and help pay expenses.

Just another thought, check out the Canyon Runner seminar series each winter. I went ot the Atlantic City one last year and learned a lot, they have a session just on ballyhoo rigging by their mates, as well as all the other essentials, SST charts, gaffing leader, chunking, trolling spreads, etc, good way to spend a winter weekend.
