New vessel enters the 'Whale Wars'

Three years ago the wave-piercing trimaran Earthrace broke the record for fastest circumnavigation by a powerboat, which had been set by Cable & Wireless Adventure.

A year ago, Earthrace - renamed Ady Gil - was involved in a collision as part of the anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's fleet and wound up on the bottom in Antarctic waters. Now Cable & Wireless Adventure has followed a similar course and has signed on as the newest vessel in the Sea Shepherd fleet.

In 1998, the 115-foot Cable & Wireless Adventure set an around-the-world speed record of 74 days, 23 hours at an average speed of 16.5 knots. Earthrace completed its circumnavigation in 60 days, 23 hours, 49 minutes.

Sea Shepherd acquired Cable & Wireless Adventure - reportedly valued at about $4 million - painted it black and in November christened it Gojira, the Japanese pronunciation of the science-fiction monster Godzilla. The record-breaking powerboat is harassing Japanese whaling fleets as an "interceptor vessel" in the Southern Ocean.

Sea Shepherd also had painted the former Earthrace black and was using it to harass Japanese whalers when its bow was sheared off in a collision with a whaling vessel on Jan. 6, 2010. The 78-footer sank, and Sea Shepherd said the Shonan Maru, which it accuses of illegal whaling activities, deliberately rammed it. The Japanese said Ady Gil was struck as it pursued its mission of attacking what the Japanese refer to as a "whale research vessel."

    Thumbs down

People here in British Columbia know the Sea Shepherd 'organisation' for what it is-a sleazy lying bunch of low lifes.

They abandoned a ship that was leaking oil and fuel in Barkley Sound (rated by the late Jacques Cousteau as the second best dive site he'd ever been to) -just walked away and claimed they didn't own it or know who did.

The Canadian Govt was stuck with the cleanup bill after it was found that the ownership had been transferred to someone who was long dead just before it was vacated.

The SSCS claim the Sea Shepherd II was sold but the real truth is they didn't want to pay what they considered unfair mooring fees so they dumped their contaminated scow on the town of Ucluelet . I'm sure the fat man's excuse is the SSCS can't control how their ship is disposed of after they "sell" it to someone else. Is anyone from the area in question? If so it would be nice to have some pictures to document the SSCS method for ship disposal. Not that it is a secret that Watson has no problem with sinking ships full of fuel oil. Watson made a big deal about salvaging waste products from the Ady Swill before it sank (I don't believe it myself) but how many other boats has he scuttled without regard for their toxic cargoes? What a DOUCHEBAG!

    Comment found on FARK.com

"You mean those talentless morons who abandoned thier "Sea Shepherd II" boat in the Uclulet harbour in 1992? I just looked at their site, and it says they "sold" it. BS! They left it to sink, sat there for more than a year and a half. I was there and helped dispose of the more than 20,000 gallons of oil contaminated bilge water floating around in it's hull. The bill came to over 15 grand for the cleanup, and was borne by the townspeople of Ucluelet".

    Excerpt from "Around Vancouver Island":

"The next morning is beautiful and we go exploring. Port Alberni Yacht Club is on an island and there are trails leading around the island. We walk the trails and explore some of the beaches with Ernest, Brian and Ted. There is a moored, half sunk freighter in the bay across from the Yacht Club. What the freighter is doing there, we have no idea. [UPDATE 2002: Per one of my readers, this ship was/is the Sea Shepherd II of Captain Paul Watson fame, which was basically abandoned for unpaid moorage near Ucluelet and later moved to Robbers Passage in Barkley Sound. Originally the ship was a replacement for Sea Shepherd, which Watson scuttled somewhere in the Pacific.]"

I'd just like to clarify the original vessel Sea Shepherd wasn't sunk in the Pacific it was scuttled with a limpet mine in Lisbon harbor after a court of law awarded it to the owners of the vessel Watson rammed the "Sierra Trader". Watson should paint a kill on his flagship for the Sea Shepherd, WhalesForever, the Ady Gil How many boats has the SSCS cleaned of toxic materials before they were scuttled? (answer none). Watson didn't think about that until it was pointed out by people on the now defunct AP/WW forum. We told that Balloonhead Watson that the Earth Race was going to pop like a balloon when it came up against a steel hull or ice. I think he wanted to sacrifice the Ady Swil for the donations it will generate. Watson learned from the first season everyone felt bad for the Japanese because of his actions and their inaction. In the 2nd season Watson was more willing to expose the ramshackle condition of his ship to the public because his eco-zombie supporters are more than willing to support his demented agenda regardless of how unrealistic it is.

If your neighbor was doing something you didn't agree with attacking them and using intimidation rarely works even if the law doesn't exist (unless you have overwhelming force). Most people don't respond well to threats and that goes double for the homogeneous Japanese. All that the SSCS has done is unite the Japanese behind the whale researchers and whalers. The female Japanese crew member from the second season even admitted on camera that her parents and most Japanese people considered the SSCS an eco-terrorist organization. It is very telling when Greenpeace goes out of their way to lie about Paul Watson's role in the founding of Greenpeace as a damage control measure around the world. The SSCS is no more helpful than Hamas is to the Palestinians.

    I get all the drama,

I watch that show and I cringe........and then again..........I agree with them. No one needs to kill whales. Its stupid. F the japs. They have been a society of raping the earth as long as I have been alive.
I look at all the Volvo owners on that ship.....and I hate them. They are a bunch of tool bags. They are way out of line in what they do........Yet, I agree. The real $$$$$ in the woodshed, is the japs.
The guy that runs that operation reminds me of my very own brother in law. A liberal ninkcompoop! Just the same, I watched a program about Costa Rica where he tried to stop shark finning and I had a different view of him. That too is wrong. Also done by the japs. Unfortunately the govt in Costa Rica talks out of both sides of their mouth. They cover it up, because they profit from it. Keep doing that in Costa Rica, I guarantee you the fishing will crash. Everything will be effected.

With that in my mind, I would give the guy latitude. He has an attitude that rubs people the wrong way but, while the japs pretend to be a feng shue balance they are nothing more than savages and rapist. Plus, killing Whales in 2011 is wrong. Period. Everything in the ocean cant have a price on its head. Plus, If they really make cosmetics out of that whale.......Tell me, when was the last time you looked at a japanese girl and thought.......WOW, shes HOT? I think not.

I don't think there is anything wrong with killing a few whales as long as the species isn't endangered. I look forward to giving whale a try whenever I finally visit Japan.

I don't have yellow fever or anything but I definitely think Japanese chicks can be hot!!

I won tickets to that movie-it was a load of bull.

For one thing if Dolphins are so intelligent why do they return to the same place year after year after year for decades only to be slaughtered?

There are PLENTY of dolphin to go around. Nothing makes them more special than another species. Just because Flipper had a show and everyone thinks they're cute, they get pass?!

About as retarded as the idiots that ***** about killing billfish. If the species isn't endangered, and it's legal, nothing wrong killing and eating what you catch.
