Go for it, Zums. Glad you finally got it and I hope you enjoy it. I just hope you don't heed the "turn back before it's too late" warning and dig into it. It surely is the most controversial marlin, and I suspect, big game fishing book ever, but the stuff in there works and the reasons fully explained.
You should be sure to travel to a filament of Gulf Stream water over the 60-100 fathom depths. For the most up to date and comprehensive information on this and where fish are likely to occur use ROFFS. See them at www.roffs.com. Much more than a simple sea surface temperature map.
So Ace, did you get out there yet? planning on it anytime soon. I think we are gonna give it a try next time have a window. We're north of you out of Shallote inlet...gonna try a spot east of the 100/400. This thread cost me some $$ on some new lures i plan on tryin'. Will post once we can get out there. Good luck.
JKIL1.....The three Blues I have caught have come from the BlackJack Hole, Offshore of the Steeples and the Scarp. All were rats up to maybe 250lbs. One was in shallow water 150 ft and the others were deeper out to 350 ft of water. We have caught alot of fish on that 100/400 line over the years. Hope to get out there the weekend or first of the week.
Just figured i'd give an update to ACE or any of the guys in our area...Fished yesturday 8-16. Had lines in at 100/400 area at 0845 and worked from 30 fathoms on out. No weed, not much bait. Saw a few flyers spread out. One knockdown about 30mins in, it was a wahoo, came undone after a few seconds. Then continued w/ no action for several hours. Around noon we get a blue in the spread. Stayed w/ us for about4-6 mins. He came right up to the spreader (30 ft off transom). i'd guess he was about 60" from tip or dorsal to tip of tail. He swam back and messed w/ our large ballyhoo but wouldnt eat anything. It was cool seeing him out there, but it made for a long day of trolling w/ slow action. Pulled in the rigs and saw he had slashed up 2 of the ballyhoo pretty good. Still new to this billfishin'. It was DEAD FLAT out there, not sure if that should have made us change our strategy or not. Crazy thing is we were the only boat out there. Cold beers and great weather, cant complain. Hit up some bottom spots on the way in. Hopefully will get out there to try again soon.
Thanks JKIL1.....was talkin about going tomorrow, might reconsider and head to the Georgetown Hole instead. Reports of a few Hoos over the Scarp and the Blackjack. Maybe Tuesday will be the day to search for a Marlin there. Ill let you know what we do.
