FRED........
Can I pull the RUCKUS RAISER/Chasebait from the Planer Rod?
Ace,
About this time last year fished the Hole and just inshore on the southern point is a nice live bottom. Fished it all day and caught three sails, two whites, and Blue. Needless to say we pulled off two other blues, caught them on bait though...
Ace,
I you're asking if you can run a Ruckus off of a planer rod as a planer lure, absolutely you can. However, I prefer a Spider because they offer up a bit more water resistance.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU ACE.
CAPT. FRED THAT WAS REALLY GREAT READING. I JUST LOOKED INTO AND AM GOING TO ORDER THAT BOOK.......CAN'T WAIT TO SIT BACK ON A RAINY DAY WITH THAT MY FRIEND.![]()
Cappy Terry,
Hope you enjoy the book and thank you for ordering it...Among other things, you just helped save another rescue Labby - in the end, probably the single most important thing about our books. Those contributions will continue after I am gone.
Now don't forget, our e-books will actually read themselves to you and even turn the pages for you, so you can sit back and rig, do other stuff on the computer, or just hang out and listen, or watch and listen. You can also stop whenever you want to, blow up a rigging diagram, whatever. This is one of the best things about the right kind of e-books and is a big part of their growing popularity...you don't have to love or even like reading to enjoy and get the most out of them.
(And don't tell anybody, but the books are going to have video sections soon. And when they do, updated versions will be sent out free to those who have bought the books without them, so there is no need to wait for that.)
Thank you again and I hope you enjoy the Marlin book. Fact is, it is about the new, new, new and is indeed the most controversial marlin, or any other species, book ever written. It will expose you to some new techniques and tips that really work and Roddy Hays' chapter is among his best work ever.

Blue Marlin fishing is like deer hunting. There are alot of woods out there but the big bucks aint sitting at the fence waiting for some 12 year old to come along and shoot him. You have to be where he is. All this talk about this lure up close and that lure on the third wave is nonsense. If you arent in the right area, You never will hook one. I dont care if all your lures are Kissed by black bart himself. I have caught blue marlin on a 4 dollar lil stubby in tinsel. You have to be in the right water, with the right bait present. If your not nothing else matters. Then again, a clock that doesnt work tells the right time twice a day, so anything is possible. Forget about what your pulling, and does it smoke, fish for them like hunting trophy bucks. The reason some are more successful thqn others has nothing to do with what they pull, its where they pull it. They recoginize the signs that say.......Fish here. learn that, and you will hook up.

I can't entirely disagree with Hubris across-the-board. In fact, I mostly agree with the young curmudgeon (not easy, being a young curmudgeon!)
Every book I have ever written and every article too has stated that the first rule of fishing is to fish where the fish are because you can't catch fish where they ain't, no matter if you're fishing with lures, baits, dynamite, or nets. It is also the most commonly ignored rule in fishing and I agree, the top guys who I have had the privilege of knowing, fishing with, and learning from have all been hunters before they became "trappers". After many decades of fishing, I pride myself on doing the very same thing and I try hard to pass that vastly important lesson on.
However, I have seen too many times when the fish are zeroed in on a given size and type of fodder and even if you've found them, you had better damned well match it, or create a scene with a little predator chasing it, or you aren't going to catch like you should and could. And as Captain Roddy Hays, a man with unquestionable credentials as far as truly knowing what he's talking about when it comes to finding and catching marlin writes in the marlin book, this is especially so the smaller the bait - and blue marlin eat the hell out of the small stuff many, many times.
Check back and read my article "Sole Brothers" that appeared in one of the major mags - SWS, I think it was. I won a lot of money catching marlin on rigged, old, stinky flip flops, a trick that I learned from Peter Wright, who did the same thing on The Reef. In spite of that, it sure isn't the best way to catch marlin. Slice it however you want to, lures and presentation still count many times and this old curmudgeon ain't the only one who thinks so, not by a longshot.
