    Need Advice from Deep C

Deep C, we met at the Miami Beach Marina for the Miami Billfish tournament (?) this year, just after two boats there burned down and right before you saw that coastie you shamelessly photographed and displayed. on another forum, i was able to provide you with the name and number of the guy that runs the fuel dock at morgan's bluff, andros.

i live in miami and i've heard that you can find marlin in the stream near the full moon in october. when i heard this, i figured you--if anyone--might know something about it. would appreciate any advice you might have on the subject matter.

    thanks in advance, rafael

You seem to kind of "knock" the Deep one and then ask for advice? Am I crazy or just reading this wrong?

no, no, no. i apologize if it came across this way, i wasn't knocking Deep C, i have great regards for him, although i've only met him once and we've only exchanged info a few times.

he posted a while ago about the female coastie he photographed and as always he did so with his very unique diction. the post was very witty and i was simply making reference to it and the time that we met at the docks. for reference sake, see the attached thread on this subject he started.

    Im back...
And yes, I did shamelessly photo the coastie... I kept threatening to spill oil in the harbor in hopes of her violating me and a hard take down but no luck...She was a keeper though.

Forst... Thanks for any and all info for Morgans... I'm bound and determined to get all the pocket time I can this year.

Next... Yes there are marlin off our waters... A few in October and a sneaky secret revealed here is that there are quite a few in late January. Most don't know about the bite cause of either weather or they're busy concentrating on sails inshore... I stumbled on it going swordfishing and pulling the big stuff headed out.
Though I pull some big stuff on my inside riggers I think they're acting as teasers more or less as the bites I get have been in the riggers on medium large ballyhoo with concave lures over them. Blue/ white or blue/ silver being the most productive followed by purple shades (also concave).
Would I target them? I have and done ok , but its far from a "hot" fishery... I found the most activity up on the Palm Beach end to be short of the sword water in roughly 1000 feet give or take a couple hundred. In february. I have found a few in tighter in 500-600'.
The October fish that I foud were all deeper. Near center stream. I have also found yellowfins out there at this time of year and found them to fall for the same stuff their northern cousins do ( green bullets and spreaders)... October at least in the Palm Beaches is good for the blackfins too and I have found some great swording this time of year too...

Deep C, thanks for the quick reply. i appreciate it. i also hope to spend some time in the pocket this year and pray the situation at chub stabilizes so that we can dock there at reasonable rates and with access to resources. from what i read, it doesn't look good.

although not a hot fishery, i'm going to give it a try in october and perhaps in january as well. why not? that's what fishing is all about, no?

i guess i have a few further questions for you and others that may be reading this post:

    1. i plan on setting up a spread consisting of four lures/natural baits. with this set up, is it advisable to use teasers as well? if so, which ones. i will have a pitch bait prepared also.

    2. should i put some weight on the lures in order for them to remain just below the surface?

    3. would this (use of the weight) work with concave lures (i've not really used them much)?

    4. troll north or south? (this topic generates tons of discussion down here in peaceful and beautiful miami.) and if south, would you zig zag as bouncer smith tends to recommend?

thanks in advance and i hope to see you in chub this year. maybe we should deliver an invite to that well-built coastie that you became so fond of so quickly. kind regards,

I run 7 baits... A bird with a swimming hoo in the shotgun position. Two concaves over hoos on the riggers.
a large purple slant on left inside, a large blue concave on right. a couple small flat heads over hoos on the flats... Run em harder than you would for say sails or dolphin. 6.2-6.8 knots seems to be good.

    No need to add weight...

If its bumpy you could add a half ounce to the concave/ hoo chin.. but again not really necessary...

I usually troll south and my zig zags are really big ones going from say 800- 1000 feet on each zig or zag...
