    NC Yellowfin and Flyers

Im planning a trip to the Outer banks this weekend and I want to know something. I have fished Hatteras and the Yellowfin would jump out of the air 5 feet to get a flyer and not touch a trolled bait, then the next day ride up to the Point and get them heavy on the troll. Are the feeding habits that differant in 30 miles or am I not seeing something????

The difference my be the water.

I know water is water right?

    Wrong

There is a big difference in Blue water, Blue/Green water and blended and so on.

Where you fished the first day might have been warmer blue water. Therefore it was much clearer.

The main reason the Tuna bite slows down come the end of spring and begining of summer and so on is because the water warms up. When it warms up it gets clearer. So, the fish can see better. YFT can already see better then just about anything out there swimming. So catching them trolling is pretty few and far inbetween.

That's when your long leaders and small terminal tackle come into play IMO.

Usually when the water warms up people turn to the kite. The kite allows you to fish the same area but there is no leader in the water AT ALL.

IMO the reason for the change in bite is different water conditions.

Yep.....straight up gulf stream water off Hatteras, and the tunas and mahis were skying for flyers Memorial Day weekend......generally more blended water on the break off OI and some different bait to go along with that.
