NC Yellowfin

Anyone see the article on NC yellowfin in this months issue of Sport fishing? Do they run that small down there or was the capt just inept? I can't belive the size of some of those tuna they held up for pictures, I catch bluefish bigger than that!

I have found the winter fish to be about 25 lbs on average when I used to be up there. Because they were small you didn't get anything for them, $.70/lb trunked.

However they were the best eating fish of the year. In May I would almost would rather have one of those steaks that had been frozen, than the fish I was catching. Not sure if it was diet or what, but in the winter was when I filled my freezer for the year. Then sold the bigger fish that came in the spring.

I did tag and release a lot of those little pups. Which I always thought was kinda fun. But, I put the steel to a load of them though.

What trips me out is I can get $1.50lb for a strip gutted mackerel with about a 95% yield, and only get .70lb for YFT with a 55% yield.
