when i went to tropic star lodge i thought the same thing.i stayed back from fishing one day, like a politician on a fact finding mission. the panamanian dont need "do gooder's" coming down there trying to change their lives. all they really need from them is cheap, uneducated labor. now im no liberal, but i always believe in butting out. it sort of reminds me of people with exotic birds in their house. where do you think that bird would be happier? living in the jungle he was captured from, or your poorly decorated small living room with a dog barking at the door everytime someone knock's on it? if you want to go live in that culture, i guess go do it. but dont think for a minute they think your doing them a favor. and dont even begin the education nonsense, i saw that too. just smart enough to do what they want them to do, without asking questions. and definitely dont ask what i think the religious groups want from all these people! JMHO, and i have never been humble.

Coming from a REAL Panamanian:
Please find out how much you (by you I mean americans and europeans) have screwed up our lives by coming to settle here. It is cheaper for you to come here than to live in the US. I can understand it. However, do the complete homework and talk to the people and you will find out that their cost of living has increased tremendously. Cost of real state has become crazy and now you guys are paying three times what you could have paid 5 years ago and panamanians can´t afford decent housing.
The government keeps talking about this "boom", because most of the officials making a big hefty profit out of it. They really don´t care about the people. If it was up to the middle class of Panama, immigration laws would be a lot more strict. We are basically paying taxes so you can have roads, water, etc. and you pay almost nothing. In my line of bussiness I talk to a lot of americans living here and for some reason they tend to think that they are making us a favor. Not so......In your head, however, you just like to think that way because it is more convenient.
Sorry for venting some steam on your thread. Nice property, by the way.

Not trying to pick a fight, but how better off would US citizens be without all the immigrants legal and non legal that we keep up with our hardearned tax money also. It's the way of the world...everyone is looking for a better opportunity and will go where they think they can get it and with little else in their minds but helping themselves. I know it's hard to sit down and take it but there is little that you or I can do about it. Get used to it. Just like US citizens you are governed by a corrupt few that are only looking out for themselves and their special interests.

PS - I bet that the US citizens that are invading your country are doing so by legal means. Just feel lucky for that.

Yes. I´m in Panama City. I´m really sorry if I screwed up your thread. I just wanted to put things in perspective. I trully believe you are happy with your move, and as I said before, I can understand it. Many foreigners dream of having this sort of life where you get to fish all day and walk around in sandals with you shirt unbuttoned all day while still making a buck. I´m not necesarily talking about you, but I´ve met many that just want to get away from real hard work in their country and move down here for the eternal life in the sun. At least that is what they believe will happen. I sincerelly hope your intentions are as you stated.
Our governement has made up this fantasy term called "residential tourism". IMHO that is terrible for a third world country. I'm a believer in good old fashioned conventional tourism. Tourists come and go and leave fresh currency every time.
Dogkillr, your government has the tools to stop illegal immigrants. They just don't want to do it. Somebody has to do the work that americans don't want to do anymore. Same with africans in Europe.

I have to agree that some americans can be lazy....the government makes them that way with their handouts. But we have more than enough people that will do the work that the "somebody" you talk about does....just not tax free. It's very hard for "somebody" that pays taxes on $10.00/hr to compete with "somebody" that makes $8.00/hr tax free. And yes, we have the tools to stop it but like I said we live with a somewhat corrupt government as well and they have their motives.

We had two drive-ups from Boquete this weekend - they get tired of the rain up there after a few years and start looking for the beach.

The warm water is pushing back to the east again so things should be hot over here for April.

Oh boy...picture this ..... one guy with an 7' surfboard bag choked full o' sticks.....a fishing pole holder with 10 rods in it....and about 3 large gear bags....guess I will buy clothes when I get there
