My first fishing post...And a few questions
First I want to say thanks to ALL ON THIS WEBSITE!!!!
We fished just south of the poorman's canyon with My cousin and his father on their 27 Albe. We wanted to leave IRI at 4 Am but a few small issues put us back untill 5 AM. Orignal plans plans were to go to the Wasington to try for our fist dirty white one but cut it short at tthe 100 fathom line of the poormans b/c of the nice weed lines we found(to no avail) we worked south towards the Wash and hooked into a dolphin at 9 am and that was it untill 2PM Meanwhile watching a couple boats around us throw some black smoke around on some white boys (so we knew we where in a good spot) and at 2 we had The man come up, yes I mean the man in the blue suit!!!!! HIS BILL LOOKED 10' LONG!!!! he hit a Islander with a horse Bally (on a 50 wide our biggest reel)and was on not for long but he was on, being the first billfish we all had seen in our spread I got the rod and my cousin who was in the pit with me started hollaring for cameras, viedo recorders you name it he wanted it and I was yelling to clear the lines and back down he was spooling me QUICKLY!!! well he did after 30 seconds of excitement. and that was all she wrote for us, but boy was that AWESOME!!!
My questions:
we probally should have turned and chased instead of backing down?
is a 50 w to small?
what is trolling speed when using all meat in the spread or with some lures involved?
I must say I am hooked now!!!!!
Thanks again for everyones help!!
Jay
P.S. Wahoo I will be looking forward to one of your bait rigging classes I do need the help!!

is a 50 w to small?Apparantly so
. Without a doubt more Blue Marlin have been caught on a 50 than any other reel (due to it being the most popular charter all purpose reel size). An 80 is a much better choice if targeting Blue Marlin, but encounters with really nice fish are few and far between--- the choice is yours and your pocket book and will be way overkill and not much sporting on Tunas. If She spooled a 50W in 30 seconds, it was a real pig allright. With the length of the bill, are you sure it wasn't a big Swordfish?, but then again it would be unlikely for a sword to pull off that much string so quick.
what is trolling speed when using all meat in the spread or with some lures involved? 5 1/2 - 6 1/2 kts is about right for pulling dead baits.
I must say I am hooked now!!!!!
