    My Archer Experiences...So Far

Last year I came across some info posted by Captain Fred Archer that neatly organized my own many disparate observations. That started me reading every post of his that I could find.

In so doing I’ve seen many posts where some folks badmouth Capt. Fred because they think he’s trying to sell them something, or his posts are long. I’ve found that he’s giving away priceless info FREE, info that he’s worked hard to learn during countless days on the water. There are not many successful charter captains willing to tell their secrets. Yes, he can’t distill it all into an on-line post, even a long one, so he refers those folks who want more to his e-books, and now he’s even giving some of those away FREE. Sure, if you want to take full advantage of his teachings you’ve got to use the tools he’s found work best, his superbars, but he’s not forcing you to buy them and is even recommending stuff he doesn’t sell. So, at the risk of getting flamed, I say to those who don’t like reading Capt. Fred’s long (or short) posts that describe the tools and techniques he’s found work best – don’t read them; don’t buy his stuff; go away! The fish you don’t catch will be more for those who do heed his teachings to catch.

Sorry, but I digressed. After reading all those posts, I ended up buying his e-books too. Eventually I scrounged up some money to buy a couple of superbars. Now I’m not going to try to tell you that they are some kind of magic, that every fish in the ocean will come a-swimming to your boat to chase a superbar, but if you’re good enough to put a superbar where there are fish, it’ll get bit more likely than not. The fish will, in my experience, still hit other lures in the pattern but they’ll hit the superbars hard! Take a look at the two photos of different ono (wahoo) caught on superbars; note that they totally swallowed the armed chasebait. The hook is deep in the fishes’ throats. These ono were not getting away (we followed Capt. Fred’s advice and used wire; it’d have been bye-bye had we been using mono)! In the first photo you can barely see the chasebait in the fish’s mouth; we pulled the squid up the leader (hook’s still in throat) in the second photo. Mind you, these are different fish, caught on different days, yet both totally swallowed the chasebait. Sure beats the sliced’n’diced skirts but no hookup deal.

Of course I didn’t buy the superbars to catch just ono. I hoped to catch ahi (what we call yellowfin tuna that have grown to over 100#). So far, I’ve only boated the schoolie versions on superbars but have had the misfortune of a bigger one spitting the hook (shoulda used a c-hook?) in back of the boat. Oh, and didn’t I say that Capt. Fred teaches techniques as well as tools? Well, I may not be employing the tools (superbars) to best effect yet, but here’s proof that his techniques work too:

What techniques? Well, you’ll have to buy Capt. Fred’s e-books to find out. Hope to post a superbar ahi before the season is over.

    Tight lines,

    Great Post!

Capt Fred has got his stuff together! Yes, many poke at his lengthly posts and sales pitches. This man is sharing a life time of fishing experiences in some of the most productive waters on the planet. He has learned more in a few years, than most of us can expect in many lifetimes fishing our home waters. Thank you Fred.

Love Captains Archers posts. He will even bat around ideas with you, and make you rethink the logic of your spread. Sure has made me rethink my old spread.

Great job on the fish! Your a lucky guy to fish outta Hawaii. Will be over there in a month, and cant wait to find the big Blue that came unbuttoned on us last year! I know where she lives now!

    That depends...
I will do my best to find this thread when I return from the Keys in August on how Capt. Fred's Bars were. I've never used them but in less than 3 1/2 weeks I'll begin, and hope to have pics to share
