Have you ever tried hook a white on a big ole weighted mullet? How about an eel?
I think dink ballys are just a lot easier to hook the fish with...thats my mates perspective on it....

6 inch mullet with a 1/2 oz wieght, no problem. And a double hooked eel from the rigger works too.

I always had a good hookup ratio with mullet. Never had a good ratio with eels. Raised alot fish to eels, jumped alot of them off too.

Circle hooked squid.... i think you are on to something.

It would seem that the evolution of tackle & rigging techniques has made hooking a white on a dink bally easier....relative to a mullet ect....when mullet, eels, and squid were popular they were using wire and much larger hooks...now that you can use a 9175 7/0 or a circle hook the dink bally is hard to beat....I do however fill my dredge with skirted eels
