Had a group of Marines on the charter today, that never been offshore before. Headed out in the morning to a little north of the Big Rock. Figured it was going to be a little crowded to the south.
Stopped on my mark and found a nice rip about a mile from it. 69.5 –71 degree change First fish comes off the bridge pole. Nice wahoo. Worked the area some more, planer rod goes off, another decent wahoo. Tried trolling out to the deep, colder water, so we went back to the same spot. Caught a dolphin or two and had some short bites. At around 11:00 the planer rod goes off. Charlie backs off the drag about half way. And line is peeling off the 80 reel fast. Put one of the guys in the chair and clear the lines. And finally the fish settles down. After about 10-15 minutes the fish starts coming to the stern. Well he wanted no part of it. All lit up, mean and green. In a split second the fish turns the chair with the angler in it 90 degrees to port and starts running toward the bow. I had to spin the boat on him like a bluefin. Get him to the boat again, Charlie wires him but he decides he wants to make another run. Finally get some steel in him. Wahoo about 70 pounds. Never saw a meaner hoo. Trolled back over the same spot and the planer trips again. This time a fish hit the braid and cut it off. Worked the area which was only about a mile and a half square for the rest of the day and managed a few more dolphin.
