    Morehead Winter White Marlin

Last week I heard a report of a white caught east of the Big Rock. It made me realize that this is not the first report of wintertime whites out of Morehead.

I'm just wondering if these are loners or is there a small winter population of them way offshore?

We will be heading out of Southport to do a little Wahoo fishing if the weather holds. One of my favorite times of the year to head deep...Mark

I remember last year around this time they caught an 80 lb blue marlin out of MHC I think. Water was 71 degrees out of Hatteras this past Monday. It aint to cold, that's for sure.

I think if someone put a true white/sailfish spread (maybe with a couple of those dredge teasers that Joe was showing with the hogies or something) and got out to some warm water over the 100, that you could put up some numbers.

History repeats itself out of Morehead pretty consistently, like the wahoo's at the 30 minute rock every fall. Yeah, you might get kinged pretty good, but you might also get tuna's, lost dolphins, and unlucky wahoo and bill or two.

I would think there are always some resident fish around, we caught a blue one dec. 30 2001 when I fished on the For Play'n. All the little pockets of sails and whites around in oct. and nov. not much coverage. As long as you have some kind or a gulf stream blend year around.

    Thumbs up

We do pretty good on the Wahoo when we can get out this time of year. I move the boat from Wanchese to the house and trailer to Southport to fish for them. I like to start at the 30 fathom line over structure. If the kings are to thick I head deeper till I am out of the kings and cudas. When we find bait we stick with it and the hoos eventually will show. A favorite tactic of mine is to either slow the boat to a crawl or stop the boat over the bait and let the lines sink for a few minutes. Then start trolling again and this normally will entice a strike on the deeper fish. I like fishing deep this time of year. Leave the dock in warm gear and by the time we start fishing we are fishing in shorts. Then on the way home put back on the warm cloths!! Hoping we can get out Saturday for the long run out of Southport..Got to love it!! Mark

We have had a Sail or two in the spread but no Marlin. I have heard of a few blues being caught deeper this time of year in the past.

Here are a few pics from 2008 Jan and Feb to warm you up.....
