After numerous cancellations, turn aways, and one trip called short, due to unrelenting winds, we were finally able to get our first offshore trip of the season in. Met the Vernon Brown party at 5:15, pulled out at 5:30am. Beautiful ride out with a moderate swell. Headed up the beach to the 700’s. 72.5 degree water. Worked a couple of my spots and soon the planer rod trips, seconds later he came unbuttened. Right long goes off, nice wahoo around 35#. A few more short bites and that was it. Worked our way up the beach and did not mark a scratch of bait until we got to the 800’s. By this time it was breezing up out of the west building to a solid 5’ chop.Weather man called for light and variable. Vern told me he has been on plenty of charters in his life but had never caught a yellowfin . Well we are sure going to try our best to get him one. Found a 1 degree break on the 40 fathom line, 73.5. Four lines go off and three come tight. At this time the are only 2 of the party in the pit. Charlie had to leave a rod in the corner so he could tell the guys hanging out in the salon to come out. Three yellowfin in the box. Found a little bit of scattered grass and caught three dolphin. Heard the fishing was slow from what I gathered on the radio. Picked up our lines at 2:00pm for the ride straight into the sloppy seas. Wasn’t the most spectacular trip, but it was sure good to hear the sound of screaming reels and popin rigger clips again and everyone caught a fish.
