Similar to the others here, we had some great shark fishing, but no qualifying fish.
After being delayed one full day due to storms, we set out at midnight on Wednesday. Taking a nice slow ride out, we arrived at the Dip around 5:30 to fish the eddy that had been pushing down the wall. Working our way towards block we caught a white marlin about half way there. Shortly after releasing the white, we had a nice sized Mako come up (fishing on the warm side) and clobber a green machine, taking the hook and most of the skirt with him. Working the block canyon area we caught two Mahi and a few small yellowfin. Not great fishing but sushi for the week yet again was achieved.
On Friday as others have reported the seas were 12-15... the 29 foot Luhrs "Blue Jacket" went down with all five people being rescued by another boat in the tournament, the Sophia. We also heard a big Cabo had their windshield blown out. Needless to say we stayed at the dock.
Saturday headed out at 4 AM to be in our spot by 7... by 7:15 we had a Thresher jumping with the hook from our deep bait in his mouth. Unfortunately we saw he wasn't going to be quite big enough. Released him, 30 minutes later have another bite... this time a Mako... brought him in and released. You can imagine we are pretty happy with where we are fishing by now. Another 30 minutes, we get another bite.... good fish this time. Another Thresher!! Bringing him boatside we realized he's not going to cut it.
And so it went.... we caught and released a total of 9 Makos, 2 Threshers and 3 Blue sharks. Unfortunately the Threshers were about 175 and 225. The second one was close but no way would it make 250 so it was released. Two of the Makos were in the 125 range... one was 69" or so. All of the rest were smaller then 100 lbs. All in all our best ever day of sharking, but like most everyone else no qualifiers.
On the way home we ran through Long Island sound and down through New York. Never done that before... it was a very cool ride. I attached some pics of the journey.
I believe the final board was as follows:
1st place: 361 Porbeagle
2nd place: 320 Thresher
3rd place: 299 Thresher
4th place: 267 Mako
5th place: 259 Mako
Volatility had a 259 Thresher which was weighed after the 259 Mako, so they were 6th. Another small Mako made weight too. Total of 7 qualifiers.
Not a good year for the Monster Shark tournament. Bad weather, losing a boat, and participation way down... but we still had a great time. Hoping the participation is up for next year.
