Thumbs up MONSTER SHARK OAK BLUFFS 2008 PIC'S & REPORT

Well another year has came and gone for us at the Monster Shark up in Martha's Vineyard.

We arrived Tuesday to a whole lotta of work 5 houses,15 boats, 1 car and to much crap to do.

After house shopping and figuring out which house we wanted to say in, we finally settled it was a nice house. 1 out of 5 of the houses had AC so we gave that one to the Long Island dealer. It was friggen HOT and more humid. I was tempted to sleep in the car a few nights

There was only a few minor hiccups. On Weds one boats called 20 miles out from the Vineyard and lost a motor. Sent him over Thurs morning. They cleaned the entire fuel system, replaced a fuel pump and regulator and sent her on her way by mid afternoon. Thank you Hyannis Marine for taking care of him

The rest of the boats made it in just fine and all tied up and time to get ready. Immediately some of the guys received Miller Lite, Coors Light and Red Bull sponsorships just being on the docks all they had to do is fly some banners and such for the week The partying was there but it went in spits and spurts. The disco ball was flying high, someone lost thier blow up doll.

We all fished Friday and Sat. except us

Friday morning we set out to the dock at 3:15 and shoved off not too long after that and headed out to Atlantis to cover some ground. After running and searching around a bit. We headed back inshore and found the almost perfect water there. Plenty of life and loaded with Sharks

We spent a lot of time covering some ground and searching for the perfect water and got our lines in a bit late at 7:30.

We set up in 65/66.4 degree water and we had every temp that we could of ever wanted up to 74 degrees in a small radius

After power slicking for a mile we had our 1st little mako come up in the slick

By 8:15 we had our 1st blue shark on the rod and Collin Ewing from the Guppie Ann 25's had it under control and released. The Guppie Ann is ran out of Mass by one of our owners and they came along on our boat for the Monster Shark. Top notch!

It was fun guys! Thanks a bunch!

By 9AM we had a another shark on, it was later determined to be a decent mako. Boomer Ewing took care of that one, at one point it looked as if we might lose it behind the boat, we the mako air out and darted behind the boat taking Boomer to his Knees. We held his harness tight and kept the words of encouragement going and spun the boat quickly and carefully!

After a decent battle we had him boat side and got a good look at him and a quick measurement and they stuck him with our new tournament cable flyer. Thanks Tournament Cable for helping me with my I forgot when I was in Cape May drive by It worked awesome and some of my guys were saying it was very cute and small but it took care of the job just nice!

It was a great time to watch the Ewing family and friends take care of this, being new to the offshore world they quickly were excited just like the rest of us and you could see the passion in thier eyes!

Here are some pics of the mako. We got him on the boat with 3 gaffs and over the gunnel and a little bit of thrashing and he got the bucket and a final measure. She measure out just perfect to be 200 and above.

We fished around for another hour before deciding to pull the plug at 11:15 and head for the scales

Here are some pics of Boomer and his Mako!

After boating the mako we fished for problem another hour, seeing a few smaller makos and spent more time fighting fish than fishing.

Just after we set our lines out again Ben Ewing got on his 1st fish of the day quickly exhausting and releasing it.

    Next up is me

My blue shark. This was probably about the last thing that I needed to do, with my shoulder being wiped but I just couldnt resist and I knew adreline would take over adventually and I would pay later but I didnt care

Quickly seeing him take the bait and him running like a freight train, stripping me down to the backing I knew that we had to get on him and get the boat spun.

We quickly did so, and I knew this sucker was going to give me a run for my money for the amount of times he took off and the pull that this ******* had I knew it would be an interesting one.

After whooping on me and him for a bit I started to improvise give my back a chance to relax. The leaning post and transom works awesome for me and I put my legs to work.

It felt like we were on him for 20 mins before they got him released. I was certainly happy when I seen the wind on, but after 5-6 times of it disappearing he was not showing me any break any time soon.

Here are some pictures. He looks big in the pictures I couldnt see him too well when they released him because I backed up and cranked so they could set him free. Someone said he looked to be 300ish? I dont know, I dont see sharks everyday and we weren't going to fool with measuring him.

See the bluefish fillet hanging on the line a mako came up and ate that off the line for me. I had the fillet up and out but they missed and he took off again

I love the 1st picture, Chuck's and my expression is priceless, He looks like " UM WTF over" lol and I am not quite sure what I was thinking

Mary Gameface makes a harness that is built for a woman (my wife has one) get it fit the butt plate so your set up is lower on your body and get your hand off the rod and on the reel Both anglers in your pics have horrible technique anything with size would have kicked your azzes and caused either of your to hand off the rod This would be a DQ unless your were unscrupulous like fishing after you had a fish on the deck looking to cull
    Nice report

After that we called it quits and headed home to the scale.

We were trying to figure out if we had homo's on the boat by the looks of the pictures lol Just Kidding these guys slept on bean bags the night before on the boat because they were there late and rigging and I think we all got an hours worth of sleep after trying to print some of the guys missing permits. Which didnt work, so I lost my lap top to a boat for a few days Something was better than nothing. They had active permits just not printed and on the new boats. So I left the document open and told them to give them my laptop if they got stopped

We got in the scales to be greeted by 2 other boats sitting there waiting for the scales to open. It was great they let us wait in our slips rather than idling around for hours!

When we finaly got to the scales at 4pm after sitting ther for 2 plus hours, we got her up on there and she weighed in at 184 and not making the 200 min mark

All sorts of anger and disappointment started flying we had it all right measured perfect the whole nine yards and we missed by 16 lbs

We knew earlier that we had a real good chance of winning this thing if we could pull a 2nd shark on day 2 and it could be done with everything that we seen earlier in the day. 2 over 200 we would of been real safe.

With our original game plan shot to hell, we moved on and started prepping for day 2. We all went back to shower a bit and let the sun come down a bit and get cooled off before we went to get fuel and bait. Chuck ran the 27 across to Falmouth to get fuel and bait.

Chuck calls with bad news, the one engine conked out. With Chuck and the dealer tearing the engine down and hours and daylight are being lost it was not a great sight for the next day. Chucks son called over to see how he was making out and apparently he fell in the water while working on the boat and wipped out his cell phone and had no way of calling us back later on in the night. We got a message late that he got it running but it wouldnt stay running and we would fish inshore and leave at 9am on Sat if we could get it to stay running. It wasnt fuel related that we knew off, the filters were clean and clear and the boat had bad fuel a few weeks prior because the boat sat for a few years with fuel in it.

10AM comes and the boat is on the trailer and chuck is on a ferry coming home it was over for us

    It sucks sooo bad!

All in all we had a great time, we are extremly exhausted.

Thank you to all the boats that came up and even the ones that last minuted us for a house and slip the day before. I am glad we found room for ya.

Thank you to Chuck, Contender and the Guppie Ann crew for all your hard work and efforts! Maybe next year!

Thank you to Insufishent Funds Dave for lending us his new 27 that we broke, Sorry buddy!

Thank you to Off The Hook Crew & Tournament Cable for all thier help with getting things together for me.

It was great meeting alot of new members from this site on the docks and thanks for stopping by.

Andy I know you are reading this, sign up become a member and post up! Thanks for calling me out on the docks, you had me scared at 1st when you yelled up off the boat "Hey are you Mary?". uuuuhhhh yea "Mary Inman? Yup thats me " Oh Okay". Then the next day you told me how you knew me and it was from you being a lurker on this site. Thanks for the beers and laugh's at the lamp post.

Here are some random shots from all over the place.

Some of favorite crews to start off with Chunky from Insufishent Funds and Jake and Jerry from the Handyman 38 Fountain!

Great seeing all of you guys see you at the WMO! Rest up!!

    Thanks a bunch!

    Always a critic

Not everyone is born a pro, and never have I heard anyone claim to be. We are there to try our luck just like the rest and win and have fun while doing it and we did just that.

I am not sure if you are referring to me as a bad angler or not don't really care either way. I have more back problems, shoulder and other problems that causes me to fish the way I do with it on my leg and it has nothing to do with me fishing its from other BS accidents.

I would have to be stuck by lightening before I passed or dropped the rod I rather hold the rod and get the fish in quicker then let it sit in a harness hands free. Although I would be much happier without the bruises from the reel on my arm.

As for the belt n harness normally it works fine with the belt and harness. I got drop down straps for it earlier in the week from Off The Hook not having the belt with me at the time, i just bought them. They were too long for me and the belt didn't sit right. I decided to put it back the way it was. Moments before the fish hit, I was swapping it back over and adjusting it back. There was no time for a belt and I just got on the rod and waited for them to bring it to me. It wasn't adjusted right at all and it was making me nuts. I will check the one you are speaking of out tho

As for a cull, we were not culling any fish by any means. Just killing time because it was 9am and scales didn't open till 3:30 and we had a whole lot of bait and chum to burn up so we gave everyone on the boat a chance to play.
