    Monster Fish ID

We caught these monsters on 2-speed 80Ws while chunking at night. Now that I have your attention…..they were actually caught with a dip net that was keeping the crew entertained during a slow night of chunking in a NE canyon. We were fishing Veatch Canyon and had these in the underwater lights. The one in the hand looks to be a mahi fry, and the other I am not sure about. Baby cuda? Check out the teeth on the little guy. Water was almost 80 degrees and cobalt blue. Any guess as to what they might be?

    Thanks,
    Will

Dolphin on the one. The other is not a cuda though it looks very similar. There is a fish in the south atlantic called snoek (not snook) that it appears to be the fry of... There is a rare species taken usually very late season up here similar to them. Not sure of the local name though.
Baby cudas look just like big ones when they get past an ich or so. Much blander colors in them...

Its possible taht I'm off target on it being that oddball specie as it could be a baby sennet which I have never seen. Sennets are very close cousins to cudas...

    This is a snoek...

Deep- Sennet are an inshore fish, I cast net them around the dock each summer (they make great fluke bait!) I've never seen them offshore.

That snoek is a cool looking fish, Deep. Looks like a possible link between the cudas and the lancetfish.

We also scooped a cool one this weekend. Smallest sail I've seen in person. Let it swim in the livewell for a while before release. Kept slashing at the surface.
