    mono breaking strength??

What is the deal with the stated breaking strength of mono? My buddy bought a spool of 80lb mono hi viz green and we decided to test the strength before we spooled up. The line broke anywhere between 50lb and 60lbs. When he took it back the guy at the counter told him that whenever they add pigment to the line it will decrease the breaking strength by about 20%. He then tested the line with his scale and it broke at 60lbs. He then tested the same type of line in clear and it broke at 90lbs. I have never heard of this before and was wondering if anybody else has had this happen. Why would they say it is 80lbs if it breaks at considerably less??

I always thought the stated strength was the minimum it would break at other than tournament line. If its inconsistent it makes you wonder about knot strength tests. Some articles I read have the line breaking before the knot. May not mean its a good knot just bad line.

Post on all my offshore stuff I use.

80lb momoi diamond and it tested out every time ive done it to be like 119-123 lbs in order to break it! so maybe that would be an option but I dont know what they are talking about because your line should at least meet your stated lb test.

I agree that it should break at or above the stated test. what color 80lb momoi diamond are you using?? I never heard of this before but when he tested the clear line it broke above, when he tested the colored line it broke below?????

Pigment or not the line shouldn't break below it's rated strength unless it's IGFA line, and even then it shouldn't be 25% low. It must have been a bad spool of line, no company in their right mind would use a coloring process that weakens the strength from 90lbs to 60lbs and actually put the line out for sale.

Get a new spool, colored or clear. Don't skimp here as it's one of the most important pieces of gear you own, grab some Momoi Diamond or Berkley Big Game and you'll be set, breaking strengths of well over 80lbs, colored or not.

I agree with not skimping on this and I did not belive the guy. The line in question was berkley big game I guess it was a bad spool? or it was marked wrong. mabey it was 60lb but it did say 80lb.
