Woke up to a soaking rain at 4:00 am in OC. Really bumbed after spending a perfect weather weekend in OC with no fishing! The rain let up at 6 and we shoved off towards Wash. Canyon.
Looked for some good temp breaks and put out lines in 71 degree water in only 180 ft. west of the tip. Started questioning whether we needed to go deeper when the wwwwwb on a b/w mini Islander goes off. Nice 50lb YFT (first of the year for me) in the box. Worked the area a while with no more hits so we went deep and warm for a while, again with nothing happening. Went back to 30 fathoms and bang, nice double header explosion right behind the boat! Lost what looked like the biggest fish of the day on the GM bar, boated another 50 lb'er on a black and red mini Islander. Then picked up a small gaffer on the wwwwwb. Had two more that pulled hooks before we saw them. At 3:00, just about ready to pick up and another double explosion close to the boat. Chuck and John got a nice work out and boated both including the biggest of the day at 57lbs. 4 for 7 on YFT and one mahi. Just a great day after my first two outings this year came home empty with waivering confidence. Hope the photos come up. Should be able to click on the thumbnails for larger photo.
