It was back aboard Eric W's 27 Contender 27 rocket. This time with Eric and his dad. I ran on a pile of Contenders this season. Each one great in its own right but his just stands out as a rocket. Kind of a freak of nature so to speak.Seems to burn almost the same gph at 37 knots as at 28. Either way the faster she runs the better she rides...
We flew across glassy seas toward the Hudson. As the day got bright enough to see we were already near the glory hole. Kablam! Kablam! Two giant bluefins launched. We slowed a medium burst, some bait showered but before we could get anything in the water it all mirrored out again. We continued to the Hudson.
Arriving there, we could hear the night guys moaning about a slow night all the way from Toms to the Dip. Some did ok but most didn't. There was cold water at the tip (66) A slight bight was going on near the east elbow but had died before we got ther. At least the water had warmed to 72.
We dragged that side for a while and slid cross crack to the west side... Somebody took "My" Balls...![]()
Relax.. Not them... When I work canyons I use lobster balls to range on. Usually my west area has a load of them. This time I guess the guy who owns them brought them home. How dare he? Doesn't he know I like them?Without them its a big confusing bunch of water, especially in overcast conditions... We played the west for a while seeing no life at all so we slid back to the east and out the wall. Some bait and birds lifted the spirits. I trolled past some lobster balls that were still in place on that side. Each one held mahi by the score but they did not want to eat. They would come look but just turn back to the ball after a few seconds.
Finally around noon we got one to eat. Then another a half hour later... At about two o'clock we had a pack of wahoo leave us a few baits short of a full spread.![]()
The radio was dead and I was at at least glad to have them. Here and there somebody would pick a long fin. Eric laughed at all the names they have for them. "Airplanes, penguins, birds, Albacores, Long Fins,,," We just had to wait our turn. Finally about 4:00 that turn came. Eric manned the rod and soon had a dandy bird on the deck. Yet another first for him. This season we managed to collect yellowfin, big eye, bluefin and now a long fin for him.
This summer season has been pretty good to me over all. Turned up the heat and got out quite a bit. There's a chance I may stick around for a few more days but the weather is making that look less and less likely. My wife and Mini Deep need me for various things. The Deep C could use her semi annual top to bottom detail and mechanical systems brought to 100%. I'll be running a couple extra boats this year so I need to find space and make arrangements... If this is indeed my last report from the north this season, I want to thank every last person I fished and socialized with along the way.
If it is the last ... fear not, bow season in the swamp is on the menu and you can follow the mosquito bitten, snake dodging, mud sticking adventures of the deep as I once again try to run some sttel tipped carbon through the armor hide of a south Florida oinker...![]()

The rolling tackle box is already loaded. Just need to stop off for Jersey tomatos, corn, a bag of clams and a couple dozen blue claws...
