Fished with Capt Howard on the Predator out of OC, MD. Also had Capt Josh Farr and Capt Donnie Moore on the boat along with Bryan Keith and a host of others. Started fishing on tuesday and had a slow day. Fish we acting wierd and we sucked. saw 5 and caught 2. pulled off a couple etc. but in general was a slow day. We were way deep and battling the weeds.
Day two we found the weeds to be alot more formed together later in the day. Still very deep but the water had more of a blue tint to it. Howard called out a bait ball and it was jet black on the surface. We changed up one of dredges to have more black in it. The fish pretty much bit all afternoon. first a single and a double off a triple hook up. We jumped off the third one. then a double and than a triple off a quad hook up , we jumped that one off also and then ended the day with a single. ended the day with 9 out of 11 and jumping the only two hooked/loss fish.
fish three straight cause of the hurricane. We were now in first place white marlin and second place overall. We started a little south from the day before and the first bite was spectacular. called out right teaser and there he was, ALL LIT UP like a christmas tree. a couple of us started saying it wasn'y a white. jumped twice and knew it was a spearfish.
then the fishing blew wide open. Capt Howard found em again as he does best, stayed on them for the remainder of the day. 2 straight quick singles, then a double and then a triple then the coolest part of our day anyway. fish gets hooked on the right long. on the left side we have the black dredge and a blue or pink chain. and then the billfish starts circleing and stabbing at the dredge that is hanging from the riggers. grabs the chain and yanks. meanwhile i was deploying the right flat and got bit. fought it for a minute before losing it but luckily the bait was still on the hook. started retrieveing and got bit again within site of the boat. caught him this time and then donnie hooked up again for a quick 3 singles to round out the day. Ended the tournament with a decent 21 whites and a spearfish.
2 for 5
9 for 11
11 for 14
Ended up with two pickle dishes. one for top boat overall and one for top white marlin boat.
thanks Donnies, josh and howard for a fun three days.
NEXT is labor day tournament I think
