mid Atlantic Tuna Tourny day 3 on Risky Business

Day two was friday and 15 boats fished. Among those 15 were some of the best on the east coast so I new the stakes were gonna be high. At weigh ins the big fish came and came and came. At least it gave us an idea of what we needed for day 3.

day3 we had the same crew from day 1 with the edition of Jimmy (just released) and his uncle Brian. we all met at the boat at 4 am and left just a few minutes later and broke the inlet at 430am. running out was a little speacial as we were in 6-8 foot seas 25 miles out. you know its big whena 50 foot plus viking gets swallowed in the trough and all you see is the tower.
anyway the 35 henriqs ate the seas up at 19 knots. I could have gone a wee bit faster but whats the point we were early so i pulled it back to 15 knots and still got to where I was going early. Once there we set the rods up with the rigs and got the ballys ready for battle.

Heading down sea we put the spread in at 730 and started to troll with the rest of the tourny boats with not to much going on and trolling around for an hour or so we started to question the spread but quickly put that to rest as the spread was fine. I made a move up to a lump and came down sea of the lump and got nothing then I saw that mojo was hooked up and I thought well the fish are here. I made a move up sea to come back of the lump dawn sea and as I made my turn and started to come down sea I started to get marks I looked back and the deep rod gets a wiggle..hook there he is..hook cranks and fish on. Danny's up and ready and puts the breaks on this fish and fights him to the boat in short order.
this is where it gets good for me...back to the crew 4 people and a angler working like a well built machine Jimmy and brian on the gaff stick this fish so perfect no yelling no missed hits no nothing just a dead fish in the cockpit. Danny the angler stayed with the rod and was ready with th e drag if the fish decided he didnt like the gaff shot and peeled off. hook and hook jr coaching danny in a way I have never seen on any other boat. Thats why its so nice to fish with hook he is so mellow in the pit and that takes the pressure off the angler and makes for a great fight.

Ok fish one in the box and its a nice one at 60 inches not a contender but good for our stringer. we need a bigger fish. at this pont the fleet kinda left but saw a few boats hooked up and came back as they came through they hooked up and now its on. I make a turn and head back up sea to come back over the spot and as I'm making my turn to go down sea the deep rod goes again..bingo this is a nice fish as it quickly burned 500 yads of line in seconds. Hook sr goes to the tower to back down I help danny brian and jimmy and hook jr are all ready with gaffs and my god everything is going so smooth Hook back down we start to gain line and things ae going great some time goes buy with the fight and danny is doing great with this fish. We get leader and then it happens.. the fish shook his massive head and riped the hook out. that was our fish but on the other hand thats fishing. We set back up and I make the same upsea/down sea pass and got nothing made another few passes and nothing so I change up a little and go into the trough and head upsea in the trough and bam fish on. this one wasnt as big but none the less its a fish danny fights this fish like a he did the other two but is getting tired so it took a little longer to get to the boat. no problem we get him boat side and jimmy and bri hit him fish 2 in the box. Its a little smaller then the first at 57 1/2 inches but its good for the stringer.

Now its time to change up the game for a bit and try for a small fish.
we troll around the area for a bit got another fish but it was to big and let it go so we left to come inshore a bit for a smaller fish.

I just want to take the time to say this real quick. all of the tourny boats that were out there worked so well with everyone with the trolling. there were no cut offs no yelling on the vhf no nothing. we all worked together with out any upsets.

ok the seas are 6-8 and now we have to head into them. we steamed into the seas at 15 knots and the boat was awsome didnt even feel it. took a pot hole or two but that was it. that boat is a fricken tank!!!!!!

got set up for a smaller bluefin had a 1/2 to do it but it never came. so far this year I cant seem to catch a small bluefin...lol
so back to the dock we go with two nice bluefin in the box. we cruised in at 19 knots till about 25 off then it layed down and I ran her in at 24 knots. the boat runs so well and is a great sea boat. This was the first time I hade her in some shit and she impressed me ten fold.

well back at the weigh station our first fish weighed in at 125 lbs and the second was 97lbs.
we got knocked out of fith by 5 pounds and took 6th overall not bad.
I want to thank the crew as they worked their asses off . I feel we one just because everything went so smooth and all had fun.
I want to thank mike mc carthy for giving me this job and f-stop for introducing him to me..thanks steve.
    until next year..tight lines.
