Finally got a day to head offshore Sat with Glenn W, my wife and the kids. We headed to the 450 line toward 50 fathoms, hoping to find about 77-78 deg water beyond 30 fath. Never got that high, but set down in 40 fath at a slight break from 74.5 to 75 deg.
As I'm dropping the riggers, I heard Glenn yelling in the pit. Figured he dropped his cigarette overboard, but when I looked he was dropping back. Never came tight, but I figured we were in a decent spot to start off. Circled a while with no luck then moved north a bit, hooking up a hoo that was no match for my bride. After a few minutes, and some chuckles litsening to a petite lady cussing, we had meat and blood in the boat!
Things slowed down after that, with only 2 kings the rest of the day. Didn't hear much good news on the radio, but I understand the sailfish started chomping down where we began, but well after we left. Go figure. We worked up to the big rock were we finished off, then headed in before the blow.
Just past the knuckle buoy, had to pull up for a while when we started blowing black smoke. Took a while to determine it was an injector that crapped out, then limped back toward the inlet. Wind whipped up and had to crawl through the washtub at the mouth of the inlet as dark was setting in, but made it back OK.
It was nice to get back out in the deep again. Hope the bite picks up out there. I don't want to have to fish for BFT all winter, although I'd like to get Glenn on one so I can really hear some cussin'.
