    MHC offshore jigging, please help

We have a few guys coming in town to do a jigging/trolling trip the weekend of the 15th. Going to be in the Big Rock/ 90' ledge area and inside. Captain says we're probably on our own for figuring the right steel to drop to whatever we want to catch. I know the grouper may be in a few spots.

Question is: What hardware are you guys dropping to them?? Assume we have the right rods and reels.

Are any of you seeing tunas on jigs that time of year??

Any bit of help would go a loooong way thanks!!

I do alot of Bottom fishing with my charters and commercially. I myself don't jig but the guys that do have been using those butterfly jigs. Ive seen some nice fish brought up but im not sure of the numbers. I know when I grouper fish the less movement the better. They spook real easy. I have custom built rods for bottom fishing as well, the fast tapper and sensitive tip gives you the edge on the big gags and reds.Give me a call if you have any other questions. Capt. Ken

Ken, jig movements don't scare off gourpers, but attract groupers.
I caught limit catches (5) of grouper on jigs among bait fishermen on the recent trip to Florida. A guy next to me had three nice groupers in 20 -30 lbs range on bait in a row while I was jigging.

Hey Kil, Your the exception to the rule. Your a great fisherman. Yes, you will catch some nice size grouper. It's like when you put down a big cut bait, you'll get a big one to pile on but you won't put in the numbers. When Im commercial grouper fishing I will out fish any jig fisherman, you of cource might give me a run for my money. But the ave. angler no way. I learned from one of the best local Bottom fisherman out of Sneads Ferry, Joe Hifko. Im also shallow water Grouper fishing for the Gags, Reds are a totally diffrent story. When there chewing the'll hit just about anything. Most of the guys jig fishing here in NC are deep dropping out at the break totally diffrent ball game as well. If you ever get down this way give me a call I'll take you to some of the Hot spots, You might even be able to see land. Ken

Ken, I don't recommend jigging if anyone wants to catch more grouper.
The hard part of jigging is resisting the temptation of using bait as bait fishermen definitely get more biites. When I fished grouper on a commecial boat out of St. Petersburg, Fl, bait fishermen got grouper bites within 30 seconds, but I had hard time to get any bite on jigs. Like tuna, groupers don't respond to jigs at all sometimes.

Tuna should respond to jigs this time of year in the MHC area .. last March I fished around Hatteras and jigged some yellowfin at night ...
