Mark, I was going to ask you about that when you were in town. I don't know anyone trying to catch them on the irons at night. I am going to do a few overnight trips this year so im going to give it a try. I would love to get Kil down here fishing the man can put a hurting on some fish. I use to fish with him when I lived on Long Island. Ken Mullen

Swell Rider, My Metal vs. Your Bait any day!!!!!!!![]()
Jigging by all means is not the best way to catch grouper but at times it will out produce bait fishing, especially in deep water. I will say I have caught most of my bigger grouper on jigs but more than anything I enjoy using the tackle. It is lighter in weight and in my opinion much easier on the angler for a full day of fishing. If the grouper bite is not happening on jigs though I do not waste anytime switching to bait. There should definitely be some grouperr around out there for sure and hopefully some tuna. I hope to get a chance at some tuna jigging out of wrightsville beach this weekend if the weather holds. It may be a little early yet but I will post a report for sure.

The irons will produce most of your bigger fish thats for sure. In the deep water for snowy's definatly. It's a great way to fish. Growing up on Long Island I did alot of jigging and then working Long Range out west it's a big thing. Theres a fine line between catch a few grouper and being sucessfull at it. The guys that live down here in NC know that. Iv'e seen the pics of fish the guys from Tex's Tackle catch, they put the heat to them with the jigs. Bunkerdunker I don't know were you live but by the name it's up north. Come on down will do some Gag fishing. Im not saying you won't catch a few on the irons but take it from someone that had to learn the hard way. I learned how to catch grouper by one of the best bottom fisherman in Southern NC. I was also very lucky to have worked on two of the top Bottom boat on Long Island when I was youger as well The Capt. AL and The Starstream. Anyway it'e all about having fun and a good time with friends. Jigs or bait who cares. Ken

Oh Yeah ! I see that my boys need to find Swell Rider on the water and become his best Buddy!!!!
For us when the water is cold butterfly jigs will do ok but mostly give you a work out on the reef donkeys. Once it warms up it's bait then if that is slow the live well will have to take over...

Those AJ's will give you some work out. As much as I love Offshore fishing, those shallow water Gags will Kick your A@$. Most guys make the long run to catch the Reds and Snowy's. This time of year when theres no presure fish inshore and just hop from piece to piece. Most of the fishing is inside 15 to 20nm and closer. Once you make it threw the Sea Bass the Gags are just waiting. Come spring and early summer the Reds move back in from the stream and it's a slaughter. My last Bottom Trip was Nov 19th before I started BFT and I caught 25 reds in 10 to 15 min. I posted the pics back in Nov. What I've learned about offshore and Near shore Grouper fishing I owe to Capt. Joe Hifko of Sneads Ferry and Capt. Bobby Freeman of Atlantic Beach F/V Sunrise. They were the two guys that gave me a chance when I moved to NC in 2005. Even with all my exp... they taught me the local tricks. Capt Ken Mullen
