That's a semi tough question, I do believe that Mercury EFI was pretty flawless and I almost want to say the same for the Yamaha, but I'm drawing a blank on that model year.

There are a lot of those motors around and I am sure that quiet a few on here will give you their feed back

doesn't directly answer your question but have had both Merc's and Yamaha - suggest Merc VERADOS - have been very pleased with them for past 5 years - reliable and VERY fuel efficient.

Given the choice, for me it would come down to the condition of the motors themselves (Physical/Visual comparrison), and how the service facilities compare to each other for your location.

I am going to say Yamama as I am starting to recall something on the Merc EFI's

This needs to be looked in to a little more but back in the hay day of Optimax and EFI's there were problems with corrosion forming underneath the waterpump bases and it was a ***** of a problem.

4-Strokes are ultimately the way to go by all means .

The EFI's and 2-Strokes are pretty susceptible to the ethanol BS and there are much more fuel components on these motors.

With 2-strokes it all comes down to how well they were taken care of with this stage in the game.

If the motors were going to have problems depending on the hours they would of had their problems, with that said it all comes down to care and wear and tear and what you are comfortable with.
