Flat flat flat i was going to post this tonight did not have time. But im glad you asked this question.
One fighting a big fish in ruff seas get a harness on so you can have a free hand to catch yourself from falling over.
BUT DONT TAKE YOUR HAND OFF THE CRANK. Never give them a inch !!
You can not give a fish a inch man anytime he turns his head you need to be reeling .
NEVER NOT HAVE FORWARD PRESSURE ON THE REEL A TUNA WILL SHAKE HIS HEAD AND GET A INCH OF SPACE AND THE HOOK WILL DROPPPPPPP.
Hope that helps lol

Flat- The vid is cool!!
Great Work! Matey1- You are a hoot- I can't wait to fish with you again!
Cowboy- you are top shelf- can't wait to fish with you again too!
Blue Print- You have alot of experience and I was impressed- same thing- can't wait!!!
Flat- Lets get together and learn how to jig- SOON!!!!
Admin- I think what you said was correct! In my opinion, thats what happened, but at least Flatbottom hooked up! I know it is dissapointing when you lose a fish (especially one that big), but thats how you learn what to do and not to do!

Sit down Shut up And fish
flat, sometimes yo do nothing wrong and still lose the fish. i think that is some of what happened to you.....except that it kicked your azz!! LOL maybe you hustled him a little too much at first and wore your self out quickly giving the fish that little bit of slack it needed to shake the hook. i think small short pumps when winding and fighting a fish work better than long pumps. jmo.
too all you guys... thanks for the kind words. i was not the only one willing to jump over and help out i just got elected. i would do it again in a heartbeat for anyone if i felt i could help them out. just too bad i was a little bit of a zero for breaking it off. i would have been a big hero had i got it to the boat but i think time was against us all.
jbhockey, i could not lose them as then i couldn't see so imade sure they stayed on. haha

WELL, I have reviewed and reviewed that section of video where the long line release came in and my conclusion is this, The rod tip dissappears the instant the fish came off BUT I see nothing on the anglers part that caused the lost fish. The rod tip was held high and the bend was in the rod to keep constant pressure and there was no pumping action involved just holding on, the back down had just begun and there was never slack because you would have heard me raising hell in the background. My conclusion as captain and expirenced angler the damn hook was to small and probably only had him lip hooked, when the third round of pressure was applied the lip gave way and the hook pulled out. This was a case of pulled hook NOT a dropped fish. Nothing different need to be done from what I can see and what I remember at the time.
Note: we examined the dacron on the stinger hooks when the jig came back in and it showed some sign of abrasion that indicates to me the fish was NOT deep hooked but rather lip hooked, in my opinion no jaw hookup no fish there lips just won't take what we can give on heavy equipment.
