Hmmmmmmmmm I could say a few things here....... Hmmmmm LEGEND..............MAYBE........ To think that everyone wants to catch a GBFT is silly...... To some folks a drum, cobia, dink grouper or even a king is all that they want. Just because some people like to catch bills doesn't mean that thats any better than catching inshore fish. Being Capt. Rick Catons Dock partner for a few years I can attest to the fact that he is a great fisherman. Not to take up for him, Lord knows he doesn't need my help! But to put the man down because he does inshore fishing is simply silly! And yes he can teach you a few things on fishing offshore as well, since he did mate on some of the best boats in the area. My hats off to him and Rick if you happen to read this, hope you find you a top notch mate.

Ron's right, Rick is a legend. He's one of the best for so many reasons and yes he does offshore.
Not to take away from any offshore guy but he has chosen to stay inshore. Some of my favorite fish to catch rod n reel are inshore.
You wouldn't believe what Rick does and how he does it. Rick knows what he wants and thats the way he is. He doesn't want some guy to hop on there thinkning that he knows everything when in reality they don't. I come in contact with alot of "mates" that are "expierenced" and don't know jack.
Most boats don't like being his dock partner because he can out fish most.
I can guarantee he's caught more "GBFT and bills" than most on this board.
He is one of the starters of this area. He's fished with all the Greats of our area.

Just Curious what would a 200 trip a year mate make, tips included? I know this is a grueling job , I couldn't handle it, I get whipped after a 2 day tournament.

I was not "slamming" or "disrespecting" anyone based on the merits of what they fish for...I just find it amusing that this "legend" is so set on HIS way (according to his ad) and seems just a bit closed minded to some other angler's ideas or techniques. I'm sure he doesn't "know" everything and when it comes to redfish, cobia, kings and the like, I guarantee I know a few things he doesn't know since we chase those down here quite often...and I learn each time out, either by the fish, partners, or others...but I guess this is what makes him a Legendary Capt. in someones book...not mine. I am sure some of it was written with flair, but I can see the interview now:

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT FISHIN" FOR "X"???
Well, I have fished the chessy for X for 12 years...I have learne...STOP RIGHT THERE, YOU CAN FORGET WHAT YOU THINK YOU KNOW...I KNOW IT ALL AND IF YOU WORK WITH ME, IT IS DONE MY WAY. PERIOD.

I guess someone saying they don't know squat and this is their first time on a boat would stand a better chance since the "legend" can "TEACH" them everything... (I doubt the job offer would come).

In my book, legends are discussed over a few beers at a bar after they pass way...like The Mic, Joe D and others. Is he good? Maybe...Maybe even better than those thinking he's a "legend"...

Where can I buy this "legends" book on inshore fishing? Maybe I can learn something...

LOL...Breel... I'm serious about his book (if there is one with the "experience & reputation" this guy has, it's got to be good). I would buy it since there are too many days down here that the seas just don't warrant a trip offshore...so we are fishing the inshore/ nearshore thing often, targeting the same fish he is so well known for.

I'm always learning... and look forward to getting through the pages and pages of testimony on this Capt and to the meat of his techniques. Hope it more than hooking a chunk of clam on a hook with a bottom rigged weight, dropping it over board when the finder shows bottom structure, or rigging an eel when the choppers & rockhounds fill the screen.

Galazio,

First of all, this is NOT a slam. If you fished a bit out of Oregon Inlet you would find that there are a few living legends that fish there, no doubt about it. And if you doubt they are legends, just ask a couple of them And yes, they do it THEIR way and don't want to hear about other ways...that's why they are so good, cause almost without fail they have already paid their dues and mated on some of the best boats in Carolina and learned from an even older legend. I, like you, have learned much from other mates. But the guys we are talking about have been doing this their whole life and have fished for and with the best.

Rick is for sure the best inshore/bottom fishing Capt. in Hatteras area for sure! Either people love him or hate him. He has saved me many a skunking and I am proud to call him a friend. Also Cato used to be a great offshore mate. Great guy! Crazy as a loon! True old school Capt. Hatteras style baby!!

Ricky was over in Oriental in September of 2005 doing the drum thing when Hurricane Ophelia came calling. He knew the "Free Agent" would not fare well at the marina so he took her up one of the creeks and set all the anchor and rode that he could work with and planned to ride her out. From my understanding at about 3 am she come loose and Ricky went to work. If he had not stayed aboard she would have been a loss up in the marsh but he stayed at the helm with the throttles down through the night just to keep her out of the marsh and all the while avoiding other boats that were adrift in the storm. From recollection that was real early one Friday morning. When we got to our fishing spot on that Saturday Capt. Rick was already there wearing the big drum out like it weren't no big deal.

He has plucked more than one fisherman out of the treacherous Oregon Inlet waters and there is no one I would rather go into the whitewater on those shoals with then Ricky. He would be the first to tell you he has learned from some great fishermen along the way I feel sure and knows that he can still learn some more but he is GOOD at what he does.

Ya'll up that way ask him if the CO at the bombing range will give you gas in the middle of the night?
