    Thumbs down Captain's Fault!

Any good Captain would have had that boat in gear and would have accelerated away from the fish as it got close to the boat, let alone allow the fish turn and come right at the boat.

Always Heads Up in the Pit...

Nasty injury...Looks like the captain didn't have much time to get on the sticks and get out of dodge, still the guy who got speared was watching the angler not the fish...

The fish just went from loping jumps to full ballastic explosions in a heart beat...

Kona, HI had a bunch of squirrely fish like this last July-August and a couple ended up in the cockpits of boats...You have to be on your toes at all times.

JT had an even crazier fish that missed landing in the pit by inches.

I believe that Captain Ron Hamlin on The Captain Hook would be considered a good captain, to say the least. Builders have a hard time building a sportfish boat that can out maneuver any billfish when they go crazy.

I once thought the same thing. I have seen many billfish at the side of a boat and later thought how could something like that video possibly happen. But I have since been cured after witnessing a 200LBish blue turn complete around swim under the boat jump and hit the covering board on the other side of the boat before any one of us could react. The captain - extremely experienced captain at that, was so confused he called out that a second fish just jumped on the other side of the boat. Never again will I doubt what a fish can do in close quarters. I still shake my head everytime I think about it.

we had a 150lb swordfish end up in the pit last year. Fortunately myself and the angler were the only ones in the pit (everyone else was asleep) when she came over the rail. Its a scary position to be in when they come piling in hot.

The mate in the video knew what was up. Watch him get below the covering board and the fish goes flying over his head into the guy that got poked. That's sick.

I have an Australian fishing DVD called Squidgy Secrets part 3: The sky is the limit!

It is about using soft plastics to catch a range of fish including billfish!

In one section they are catching Marlin and a big green one comes out of the water and takes the guys hat off with its bill they then show the guy and he has a small nick just above his eye!

Could of been a whole lot worse.

That Capt happened to be ron hamlin who is regarded to be one of the best marlin capts of all time! i'm pretty sure he has a good idea after 20,000+ billfish releases!
