the "military" does it up here off Chincoteague occasionally - is it really that tough to move 20 miles further offshore for them out beyond a 1000 fathoms? Seriously

Tommy it is a distance thing. If the drone gets to far from the base it wont make it back. They are multi million dollar drones! If the drone goes down and is not destroyed they have to retreive it. I hope this sheds some light on why they do what they do.

I understand where you are coming. the reason the ship came along side of you is because there was a live fire exercise going on. Unfortunately that some of the best fishing areas are located in the operating areas. Normally they would move farther offshore to avoid the fleet but when the drones are taking off from Damneck Va there are limited on their range as far a fuel goes. What they do is send a drone (unmanned) at a ship to test their ability to detect and destroy an incoming missle or aircraft. the big rock area to hatteras canyon happens to be the best place to do this. they want to try and save as many of the multi million dollar drones as they can. The reason the navy doesnt call you directly is they dont know where you are going to fish every day and they dont know if you are going to be in the area that day. The Navy knows where they will be at. If they tourneyment committy just made one or two phone calls they could help avoid this from happening again. Those areas are listed on charts and I know that everyone fishes in them anyway. I am not questioning you patriotism. Just posting that the military you were bashing is the same one that allows everyone to fish how they want to in this country.Yes they knew you were in the area they have an unbelievable radar system. I am sure they tried to raise you on 16 before they got as close as they could. They photo everything within photo range for identification reasons. Just in case they have an issue with a charter boat. they take pictures of all vessels. They were not there just to ruin the tourney though! they are training but I wish you could see what all goes into a live missle fire. I know you dont want to have the missle target you and not the drone. I have been on the bridge many times during our encounter with a charter boat and believe me when I say they want to avoid the fleet at all cost. They came along side of you for safety reasons. Most of the captains on the ships are fisherman too and they do understand you are just like them making a living on the water. I am not poking you in the eye Marty but hope that I might enlighten you and others as to why they the military comes along side of you and tell you must leave the area.

THE ONLY TIME A MARLIN SHOULD BE KILLED IS IF IT IS A QUALIFYING FISH IN A TOURNAMENT. If the populations were different, I would feel different, but they are not. Give even a questionable green light to do anything else and this species, and our right to fish them is done. If everyone kept just their first one, it would be done and over. This is not a question for mainland US fishermen.
The integrity of sportfishermen releasing all of these fish outside of tournaments is saving both the fish and our right to kill a limited number. Lose that integrity, and the game is over...this generation. If you think the 100 marlin recreationals land nationally is too many, then go join PETA and try to end to all fishing. IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT THE MONEY. By limiting the kill to tournaments, the number killed is so small there is not an impact on the population and it gives all billfishermen a limited window to fish competetively for the kill. It gives a fair playing field for the limited numbers landed by recreational. If we start killing outside the tournament it just doesn't work. Of the 9,000 boats fishing off-shore, all it would take is a 1% to be selfish bastards that feel they have the right to the kill marlin anytime, and it would be over. KEEP IT IN THE TOURNAMENTS or it will not be. While release only works for the small tournaments, MAKE THE MAJOR TOURNAMENTS RELEASE ONLY AND THEY WILL NOT BE. When fishing a kill tournament, every boat has a chance to win. And every boat has a chance to make what may, for the many coming into the sport, be a once in a lifetime kill of a marlin. Major release tournaments don't offer either of these. While we all want to feel we could compete, most of us (me at least) can not compete with professional teams in a multi-day release event. So instead of tournaments being a major event for us all, they would get knocked down to a small number of boats and we'd watch it on ESPN2. In addition, since tournaments are the only fair way I can think of that allows a marlin kill, without tournaments the kill would be left only to the selfish, or by lottery, or not at all. In summary, if we keep it in the tournaments we are killing such a small number of fish that we are not impacting the species; We are allowing a limited opportunity to take a marlin; We are keeping great traditions and great events alive. If we make it acceptable to kill one anytime the population will not support it. Yeah, there's other big issues out there that we do need to address, but we also need to keep our house in order on what's acceptable, and what is not, when it comes to killing a marlin.

THANKS FOR ALL THE RESPONSES, I WANTED TO SEE WHO THOUGHT WHAT IN REGARDS TO KILLING A MARLIN..
My Opinion: I prefer to have all billfish released if at all possible. I know there are kill tournaments and big money is at stake. I hate to see a big marlin butchered and killed just to hang it up for a photo op, especially a small one. If I were fishing a big money tournament I would be tempted to bring a monster in for the money, if it were close to the weight limitation, I would definitely let it go. I realize the biggest threat to marlin are the longliners, not the recreational fishermen. OT: We have a strong military presence off Va. where I live and from time to time they are having exercises (unanounced) and make us move on, I will do so without complaining, our freedom is protected by our military.
