Marlin INCOMING! cool vid we shot of a freejumper in the propwash...

    Hey all!

We shot this video last year outside of San Carlos Sonora Mex. This fish jumped three times and then took out our outrigger line and landed in the propwash. Shot on a Go Pro camera after a great day of fishing.... made the lazy afternoon troll in memorable.

    Hope you enjoy it!

Pretty sure that's a wahoo, not a marlin jumping across the wake. Wouldn't swear to it, but I looked at that tape a bunch of times and that sure looked like a 'hoo. Pretty typical wahoo attack run, not common with marlin. Whichever species, a great piece of tape!

Awesome stuff. If you freeze it at 10.5 and 11 you can tell from the tail that it is a marlin. At least that is what I see. Great stuff.

Thanks guys! Its great when you get something unexpected like that. I will try and upload in HD as well.

    Fred,

Its for sure a striped marlin, but I agree he is very 'hoo like in the approach! If you look closely before the fish enters the frame you can see two splashes to the right of the propwash... not sure what they are. Maybe he was chasing something? Also he jumps out of the wake and shows his marlin shape.

Way easier to make out in the HD version, I will upload it.

    Bill,

If I weren't such a Computer Monkey I'd be able to freeze the frames like you did and would get a better look at the fish. Still, I have seen a monstrous number of free jumping and wake-entering striped marlin and I have rarely, if ever, seen one do it that way. On the other hand, I have seen wahoo do it many, many times. I guess you are right, what with your view being better than mine. Cool shot, no matter what kine feesh.

    Heather,

Thanks for the input. If you say it was a striper, it was a striper. I wasn't there, but I have to say that the tape confused and bamboozled the heck out of me (obviously!) Adding to the confusion, yes, I did notice the two actions that looked like tuna like surface strikes on the right side. I just looked at the tape (over and over) again and I even figured out how to stop it. It's still not real clear, but I'll be danged if that bigger fish STILL doesn't look like a wahoo coming in from the side and, yes, he sure looks like he has a marlin tail when he exits the other side. Fascinating, but probably only to an old WakeWatcher like me.

Hmmm....I wonder though? Could there be more than meets the eye here???

    Fascinating!

For my 2 cents worth it looks like a hoo to me, but I'm an inexperienced novice. Super-Cool vid though whatever it was...definately one that got away...and in jumping style

Ok here is the HD version in super slo-mo. The fish comes in around 1:15. Set your resolution to 720p and fullscreen... also watch him jump out of the propwash!
