    marlin hunting in Jamaica?

wife and I are planning a trip to Jamaica this fall, and I wondered about the marlin fishing there. I see there is a marlin tournament in Port Antonio that time of year, but no details on dates, etc.

anything on the western side of the island?

    thanks.

I stayed in Negril a few years ago, and I have to say, even if there were marlin there, I didn't see a boat that I would want to go offshore on. I'm not sure where you're staying, but hopefully there is more of a fleet where you will be. I was fishing on a glass bottom tourist boat with small saplings as outriggers

Reminds me of the boat I fished on in Barbuda.....

It was a sail boat with sunfish masts for outriggers Imagine hooking a billfish with a mainstay coming out of the middle of the transom

Luckily the biggest fish I caught was a 'Hoo. Even that was a challenge to navigate around the halyard.

If you're staying on the cliffs, bring a small spinning outfit and some small lures- at daybreak you can catch some snappers/small groupers/and jacks from the rocks.

If you want to see the sapling outriggers on the glass bottom boat, ask around for "Famous Vincent"...

    Where are you staying?

I think I know where that is. I think it's on the beach stretch (I think it's 7 mile beach maybe?).

It is worth it to either get a cab or rent a scooter and head up to the cliffs- basically you just go to the traffic circle and take a right, following the coastline. Up there is a restaurant called "Rick's", and it's a great place to go at sunset- everyone gathers there. Also, if you go a little early there are some guys who do some cliff jumping right in front of the restaurant. It's pretty cool.

I would also recommend going on a horse back ride if you guys are into that kind of thing. There is a place just outside of town that you go for a horseback ride up into the Green Mountains overlooking Bloody Bay (they used to slaughter whales in the bay, so they called it bloody bay), then down to the beach. Then, and this is pretty unique, you walk the horses into the water and pull a superman move while the horses swim. It's cool as heck to be "riding" on a horse as it it swimming around. Truly unique.

Besides that, make sure to stop and get some real Jerk Chicken from a place called "Three Dives" (on the way to the cliffs). It looks like a really shady spot, and a true "dive" at that...but the jerk chicken is unreal.

Hubris is right, there are some places that are not really tourist friendly, but as long as you use common sense you should be fine. Good luck, and have fun!

Be sure to take some pics and let us know how you did!
