Schedule conflicts have us fishing the OC shark tourney the weekend after. Timing could'nt be more perfect for a really big one to show up. Maybe even bigger than last years 600. I know I'm bringing out all the big stuff and planning on going big or going home. I doubt I'll stick anything under 300# unless things get desperate. The threshers are so thick I might spend half a day on that depending on the weather. IF it's rough fishing the inshore spots with less presuure could just do it.
We're in Capt Joe.
We're on "The Chief". Hope to meet you there. I'll look you up at the Capt meeting an introduce myself. Is Franky fishing?

Rumor has it that the wild and wooly Capt. Frank the elder will even be coming along to blow their eyeballs out of the flipping heads![]()
Oh, it is a bad time to be a mako![]()
Good luck everybody thats fishing. And be safe out there.
I just remembered they allow firearms for the makomania. I wonder why they draw the line at poons but allow firearms. Saftey would be better served by allowing poons. If you're gonna throw out the IGFA might as well throw out the tough part.(gaffing big mako's)
Having been involved in the writing of those rules maybe I can shed some light.
Allowing a harpoon leads to the chance of using it as a projectile (throwing it). That is what the tourney was against.
Allowing the fish to be shot is as much for the fisherman, as the fish. Very cruel to hang a shark upside down and let it suffocate slowly. Just put it out of its misery.
The intent was not to throw out the IGFA, but lets face it, the mate can hook the fish and pass the rod, IGFA is gone long before the gaff or gunshot. We need the IGFA for some of the guidelines though... leader length, no mammals for bait, flyer rope length, gaff handle length etc. etc.
By the same reasoning you could shoot a shark swimming in the slick before you even hook it, but after thinking about it those rules are probably the closest thing you can get to a safe fair tournament. As long as guys use proper firearms handling. I spend alot of time at the gunrange and you would'nt believe how many guys who shoot regularly still have no idea how to safely handle a firearm. I worry for the guys who have no idea how to safely handle a firearm on shore let alone at sea.
I guess the big difference in that reasoning is that the shark would sink when you shot it, whereas the harpoon would be holding it.
But anyway, the rules are what they are.
Again, good luck to everyone fishing this and the SJ Shark Tourney.
Only a true retard would shoot the fish before even hooking it. Thats a no brainer situation. Even after you hook it, you have to have a pretty close shot on the fish to get a kill shot on it without shooting your line in two, especially because from a distance the line is always gonna be in directly between the boat and anything that might be considered a lethal shot. Actually kind of sounds like a fun concept though, licking off 3 or 4 shots at the sucker every time you get her in sight...
Franky-
