If I wanted to target mako here I would use big false albacore (florida bonito). I'd also run two blocks of fine grind bunker chum... I'd jack the wire section to #19 and 14/0 hooks about 18 inchers apart... Dual back boned flyers at the ready, plenty of good lighting, and a crew of guys used to big dangerous fish. The ones we have here are brutally big. 500 is relatively common, 800 on a few and a grander not out of the question... 80w minimum for the reel...

In that two day tournament, I wrecked 25 lengths of wire and set free 50 hooks ...

Lucky I guess that most of my sharkin hooks come from retired marlin hooks...

I rig a hundred rigs for marlin fishing up north each year. Hooks get used once or twice during the trip and then just get dropped into my bag for recyling.
For Chub Cay, I bust out another 200 new hooks. We leave em in the mahi and wahoos until the cleaning table time. Then we collect em back and put em away. EVen on released fish we just chop the rigs apart for components and keep running with fresh stuff. Whats left at the end of the trip adds to the kitty.
Also have some friends that know I collect the rusting clunkers... I wont use real bad or brittle ones but kinda crummy seems to work just fine...
