    Making a spreader bar

I just purchased 12 inch bodies in a blue and white squid, Do you all think they are too big. I fish mostly Hudson and Toms canyon, just got into it last year with minimal success. I troll mostly green machines and blue and white Illanders . I put out a green spreader and a canyon runner rainbow spreader with 2 illanders and 2 green machines then switch off depending on the hot lure.(usually the only one that catches anything that day ) My other spreaders are 9 inches. Looking for some input before I make the new rig and waste some time and money

Hot shot; You need to constrate on what bait the fish you are catching are eating. It's the same all over match the hatch! The first thing I do is the first fish in the boat, check there stomach contants. I'm north of you but 80% of the time it's squid 4" to 6". If you are out before sunrise or at dusk the larger baits are great.( slow them down) During the day 6" squid can't go wrong for all tuna, whites and mahi. You might want to check out the one we make g-teklures.com. Good luck and Fish on.

Most of the high speed bars built will not handle the strain of 12 inch squids at high speeds without folding in. If you plan on slow trolling them you will be fine with the 12 inch squids but I suggest you use a heavy wire bar on the larger squids so your pattern stays wide in the water.

The most important thing to remember is MATCH the HATCH! Find out what they're eating and deploy a similar size squid bar. Our typical search pattern will include 4.5 inch jets, ballyhoo, and 6 or 9 inch squid bars. Good luck this year!

Wow thanks for the all the quick response. It was really late last night when I bought the squids, I kind of figured they were going to be too big in the morning. What about cutting some of the skirt off? I like the blue and white pattern especially staying with the match of the illanders. Does anyone have 6 or 9 inch blue and white squids.

    Hot shot,

Its no question that spreaders work, especially up here.

I dont think 12 inch is to big. Blue and white isnt a bad color either, i prefer

chartuese but if i was going to pull a B/W spreader i would place it in the

middle of my spread, just behind the flat lines, and pull B/W islanders with hoos around it.

this way youre sort of mimicking a school of bait busting on the surface.

Hope this helps, and good luck......
