Mackeral stick baits are rigged with bamboo skewers down the sides, a small weight sewed into the mouth and the hook buried in the back with the line exiting the fish just after the head. This enables the bait to remain straight and facing into the current while sitting on the line. If rigged properly it actually looks like the mackeral is alive and swimming. This is the primary dead bait used for catching giant bluefin at the cape and off of Georges Bank
I would love to see a pictoral or video of this rig.

A "stick bait" is a mack rigged from the top. You take a hook, thread it in from front to back, top dead center on top of the bait.

You then take a bamboo skewer and punch it in through the eyes, down the backbone.

There's more to it. That's the jist of it though.

It works well fished from a kite or straight up and down in the water column. And yes...that's the only way to get these fish to bite sometimes.

I'll give you a hint on how to learn how to rig one...find someone who went (or go next year) to the Canyon Runner seminar.
