    Lure fishing blue marlin?

For those of you with some experience lure fishing for blue marlin only, how often do the fish come in so hot that they miss the lure? If the fish misses the lure, how often do they come back around on it? What type of hookup ratios do you have pulling lures? For those of you with good ratios, what type of hook sets are you using( single, double hooks)? Any advice would be helpful, we pull dead baits most of the time, however I feel that when targeting blue marlin only(especially when fishing is slow) lures may be more effective.

I dont think they're missing as much as trying to draw a response and anticipating a panic that doesn't happen. So yes and no its a a miss. Often they will come back and pile on it... I bat about 7-10 on blues always with a single rigged at the very back of the skirt...

Deep thanks for the input, from what I have read it seems like most of the big time marlin fishermen prefer single hook rigs.

Double Hooks are very dangerous to both you and the fish. Stick with a single.

I could offer a lot of info on this but until i come out of this slump i'm not saying chit beyond this...

Marlin fishing with lures will make you feel like a Herculean demi-god one day and a deaf, dumb, blind mute the next...one of the most exciting and frustrating techniques in fishing...no doubt about that...

got one yesterday about 350lbs blue

i agreee lure hook in the back single

this time of year in costa when you have no idea whats gonna show in the spread i troll a mix pattern

2 teaser short 2 lures on the riggers, 1 drop back ballyhoo for sailfish and a drop back skippy(small) for marlin

yesterday the short corner teaser got piled on then the marlin disappeared, normally it would then knock out a rigger lure and be on but this fish just was gone, so my crew dropped the skiipy inbetween the rigger lures and instantly she came up again and we had her hooked up with a10/0 owner circle hook and release it in about 20 min. kinda a lame fight actually only jumped once then swam up to the boat and gave up, all was good the guy was seasick anyway and wanted no more of that fish than the fish wanted of him.

so i guess the moral of that story is that sometimes they eat lures but ahving a bait ready is a damn good idea

ps all marlin this week have come up on the black bart green breakfast/no hooks 150lb leader to make it swim better.

    good luck
