    Lure Fishermen in>>>

Is there a lure that you could throw into a dead bait spread and have confidence in catching gaffers, tunas, wahoo, marlin , etc? I ask this because last year in the Oregon Inlet Gaffer bonanza we had a large blue one smack a dolphin when we were bringing it in. I threw out a horse behind an express but couldn't get it by the mahi. Horses are too expensive so I wanted to throw out a lure that could be trolled at the lower trolling speed. If so, where would you run it? What color would you use as well? We troll at 6-6.5kts if that helps and the boat is a 28ft Catamaran. Thanks,

Hi Carson, there is a slow speed lure I designed specifically for trolling at 4-6 knots. It has a cupped face and is reverse tapered, meaning that the front of the lure has more diameter than the neck where it meets the skirt. The cupped face causes the lure to dive more than a slanted face lure. The reverse taper causes it to shimmy as the water creates vortices as it tries (and fails) to flow around the head. The combined result is a lure that has plenty of motion even at slow trolling speeds.

The lure is available in your favorite online ship's store here - http://www.sportfishermen.com/shop/b...ure-venus.html

color is a whole other debate, I have chosen 10 color options to offer here, all of them have been highly successful all over the world. Hope this helps!

Moldcraft Wide Range in any dorado color (green over yellow/red/black) or blue/white. One of the few that still swims OK at dead bait speed, everything else you need to be going a little faster. A lightly weighted shell squid behind a bird works good too.

Edit: Great looking lure above too! Love the reverse taper, should push plenty of water and shimmy even at dead bait speeds.

    Thanks for the replies

It is a sweet looking lure for sure. Couple more questions. Where would you run? Short rigger? And do you sell replacement skirts for the lure? thanks,

Keep the lure near or amongst the naturals, yes either on the short rigger or a flat line even better.

We have pondered offering replacement skirts in the SFC store and it could be done if there is the interest???? What say you, SFC members, would you like to see a line of replacement skirts in the ship's store?

    Carson,

I'm far from a Blue Marlin guy but will tell you what I did last year...I did run a MC Super Chugger on the short rigger at 5 knots and just shortened it up enough so that it could grab air and have some action as it cycled down and then back up for air. Had Mahi chasing it and switched them off to small ballyhoo. As a matter of fact, I had been using a large swimming mullet on the short and switched it out for this lure and it was not in the water 5 min. when the Mahi attacked it. I was actually fishing for Whites but the short of it, the lure seemed to work well at slow speed as long as I shortened it.

I wasn't sure whether you wanted to focus more on BM or on meatfish?

Hard question to answer. NC waters really have a diverse group of pelagics in a tight area. Often times the gaffer bite takes us into deep water. I want to have a lure that I could put ino a bait spread that could provide a better chance of catching a blue marlin then a sea witch or naked hoo would on 50lb class tackle,(i have been at the losing end of that battle). Since the marlin aren't concentrated and meatfish is usually our catch, I wanted the lure to be able to catch meatfish as well. Does that help?

I love the super chuggers in purple/black & pink/white on the flatlines or short riggers.
