Lumpy Bottom & Parking Lot Report 7/29 & 7/30
Friday - Left the dock at 12:30 am for the long ride to the Lumpy Bottom with Niles, Bird, Scotty, Bill & Jack. Arrived and were one of a few boats there. Started chunking and put the live spot, butters and sardines on as hook baits. Marked the balls off the fish the entire time. BIG BIG marks on the bottom with fish all through the water column. About 9:30 Bill got our 1st bite 5 cranks off the bottom (butterfish). A real solid fish that we fought for 45 minutes until the Gamakatsu circle hook straightened
That fish was a brute. Got our next run off about 15 minutes later (Butterfish). Bill handed me the rod and the fish took off under the boat, so after some careful maneuvering I was able to get him out from under and shortly there after the 40lb fluoro leader parted and off he went Another real solid fish. About 30 minutes later Bill got another bite this time on a sardine. Also on the bottom....fish felt the weight and dropped the bait. 0 for 3 on Friday Saturday - left the dock at 1 am and ran out with the Hooked Up down to the Parking Lot. We got there just before Capt. John and had 4 fish immediately on live spot down 50 feet. The biggest fish 38lbs. The other 3 were in the 25-30lb range and were released to swim another day. Once again we marking them real good. Decided around 8 or so to head back to the Lumpy Bottom and see if we could hang one of the brutes we lost Friday. No runs no hits no errors on the tuna fish at the Lumpy Bottom, but I did manage to hook a White Marlin on a butterfish. He put on a really good show, jumping about 10 times. He was a rat about 40lbs but still a real cool thing, especially on the chunk. There are some big fish down there if you feel the ride is worth it. BIG BIG marks on the bottom most of the day Saturday but they wouldn't eat for us. 40LB leader and live spot are a must it seems like. Great couple days with a good crew.
