Since it seemed like I got nominated to put this one together I'll do my best. I will keep this G Rated as I know NOTHING. Pics and Videos will follow once we have them all sorted out. We have 1000's.
Dead Pirates tell no tales !
At this point my guess is most of us still feel like trolls but are putting on that happy face to act like we actually enjoy living in the Northeast and not down where the fishing is great year round.
Day 1 Started out bright and early with a departure from Philly Airport at 6AM.
We had a quick layover in Miami to pick up the smarter, tanner, and half retired part of our crew that was joining us. We landed in San Jose at 1PM and we all squeezed into our carriage of death riding the edge of cliffs that plunged hundreds of feet into Viper infested forest and croc infested rivers, so of course we did the smart thing and drank bottles of Duty free Rum and cold beers all the way laughing death in its face insisting our bus driver get us there faster.
We finally arrived in Jaco Beach and threw our bags down at the Hotel Club Del Mar. A newer hotel, nice. I'll leave it at that. Its a hotel....and honestly who cares. It served its purpose, it had a safe, it was clean, there were clean sheets and a view of the ocean. We couldnt ask for more, it was a place to sleep....for someand we just drove through two hours of people who lived in tin huts.
The first night some enjoyed the beach right away...some of us enjoyed a nice sit down dinner before getting to bed early for the next big day of fishing...some of us never unpacked, ate a bag of peanuts and a bag of Chips Ahoy then ran off to enjoy the town and explore the sights and flavors Jaco had to offer. Man ! Those peanuts were tasty!
Early AM started with a 15 Minute cab ride to Los Suenos....it was like entering the gates of heaven...which surely after this trip many of us may never get to experience a site like that. As you pull into Los Suenos after seeing it so many times and in so many advertisements I can honestly say that the pictures do it justice. It was exactly as it looked in Marlin Magazine or on Offshore Adventures. I was waiting to see little Melissa Fisher running down by the pool in her little bikini and actually in the day 2 report I wasnt far off. The place is beautiful. Total boat **** !
10 guys, 2 Groups of 5 seperated by a coin toss....so I was told. Group 1 was the father and sons of the group. Somehow they wind up on the 58' Garlington - Capt Jose Miss Behavin. What a freakin boat !
Group 2 were the single guys, I mean single as in no fathers or sons on the trip. Myself and the Kidd were on this boat. We were fishing on the Lucky Devil, formerly known as the Dixie Devil and Jersey Devil a classic 48' Warren Oneil totally redone, freshly painted hull concealing the Engines that purred liked kittens. This is the boat that we were told was the Grand Daddy of them all and the boat that started what a Carolina boat is. This boat was 40+ years old and solid as any boat I've stepped foot on. They proudly displayed an old black and white photo of the boat in Hatteras back in the early 70's with a Grander being hoisted off the boat. We were fishing on History with Capt Mike and our Mate Marco. We headed out past Cabo Blanco about a 35 Mile run north from the marina in slick calm conditions. As we fished all day you could see land and the great mountains of Costa Rica out in the Distance. We had knock downs and bites all day, these were no small fish by any means. We had the first sail release in about 30 minutes of fishing, an easy 100 pounder. They look like monsters compared to dirty whites and Florida sailfish. All day long they popped up here and there free jumping all around us, chasing the occasional small fish around. It was def fishy and no reason to leave or run anywhere. 12" - 15" flyers popping out every now and then to tease us. The fish was there, the bait was there but we just never got into that "Hot Bite" you hear about with fish coming up 5 or 6 at a time on all lines. We did manage one double out of the day and headed home 4 for 9. We had many other knockdowns but they were real lazy bites and we only saw one san concho for the day. Mate and Capt had no problems with our request to let us hook fish and not just be automatic crankers for the day. We had a great first day.
On the other boat...those lucky coin flippin bastards cruised by us out of the gates on the Miss Behavin with their two mates at a nice 35 kts and headed about 20 miles further then we ran. They had the same kind of day....until the last hour. Im sure I'll get corrected here but it went off for them and Capt Jose's crew on the Miss Behavin were top notch, in an hour at the very end of the day they racked up a nice 10 for 20 or so. They came in with 13 for the day. I cant speak too much for their side of the trip other then they all came back pumping their chest and smiles they could not get rid of....of course all of a sudden they were world class fishermen trying to give us tips on how to hook fish even though these expert father / son fishermen did miss a 5 Banger when they had their shot and the Captain correctly told them they flat out stunk. You know the fishing was good when the mates are at the front of the boat trolling ballys while the Cappy is backing down on fish in the back. They got into them good.....and we had to listen to it all night until our ears hurt. Hucklebuck even has some special exercises he learned for his wrist he is going to use while fishing for whites this year...its all about the little rubber bands they used or something...he was wired and we just yes'd him to death until he calmed down after a few nice rum drinks. We couldn't be happier for the guys, they got exactly what we all came for.
Cold Cervezas and lies flowed plentifully that night at the bar at Los Suenos as we watched the sunset before we took our cab back to shower up. Some of us ate peanuts that night and some of us went out for a full course meal. Me and the Kidd enjoyed more peanuts and a few bags of Potatoe chips. Who has time for a sit down meal when you have Jaco only 5 coloneys away in a cab ride.
Day 2 Fishing sort of went the same, just with less sleep...and some no sleep
The morning ride started out with a nice suprise. As we got out of the marina running into what they call rough seas, a blistering 10-15 kt wind causing a 2 foot chop, we made the turn north only to see this commercial crab boat coming in from the distance....a crab boat we thought ? WTF is that doing here. Until it got closer and it rang a bell......its the luckiest guy in the worlds boat. Light Blue big dark Eagle emblem on the front ahhhh the one and only Artic Eagle of Offshore Adventures was steeming into port. We all anxiously awaited Melissa Fisher suntanning in a bathing suit on the deck or to give us a wave over the side as we stared at the boat but it just cruised on by and dropped the hook for the night right outside of Los Suenos. Mellissa must have been sleeping and doing her make up getting ready for our returnHurry up Mellissa we'll be back for you !

Same kind of day for both boats except the world class fishermen never got lucky and found that hot bite and bait balls again. Both boats came back in later that day with 5 Releases each and just as many misses so it was another respectable day I guess you could call it. Capt Jose on the Miss Behavin, who our group didnt fish with the 2nd day because he was booked ran 60+ miles and came back in with another 15 Release day....so no doubt when you see the mans reports up here he is def working for those numbers and running a top notch business putting his guys on fish. I know who I will be calling next year to set a trip up with for at least one day. There is suppose to be a great Marlin bite in May....we may just head back for a quick day or two.
As we were sitting at the bar that night before we grabbed dinner (bc Peanuts alone were just not going to cut it again) we all looked back on the great time we just had. Not one sole out of the ten of us had one complaint. Great company, great boats, hard working capt's and mates who you could tell just loved to fish, it wasn't a job, and they took pride in everything they did. My only complaint was Chris Fisher stopped in the bar to grab his crew before they headed on their next leg of the world tour. I was sitting their BS'ing with Carlos the old chef whose arms are all tatt'ed up. Real cool guy. Lives in Jaco Beach. As I shook Chris Fishers hand I did everything I could not to ask him....Yo Dude wheres your wife ? I wanted a picture with her, not you LOL.This was the kind of trip every NE fishermen should make. It really puts things in perspective expecially if you are used to dragging baits all day for the two months a year. Most get up at ungodly hours, fill the beast up with ridiculous amounts of energy and drive 3 - 4 hours waiting to release that one or two dirty white boys or hoping to see a blue on the trip. For what ?? No wonder the Penguin is docked down in Los Suenos ! The question has been answered without a doubt!
Los Suenos is a great stop that should not be missed by any. You have to see it to believe a place like that really exist.
On our last morning before leaving paradise most took a zip line tour of the rain forest which I heard was great and there will be some great pictures of monkeys, snakes and silver backs to come. Unfortunately myself, Earl the Pearl and the Kidd had not had enough and back to Los Suenos we went to only be skunked on a morning rooster trip. We made the most out of it and had a six pack for breakfast each to start the day on a good note. My report shall end here as we headed back to San Jose on another death carriage filled with free flowing Duty free rum and Imperials in preparation to watch the Superbowl. LMAO....San Jose...what a place to watch the Superbowl.
Yours Truly,
The Champp
