I'm just wondering if its military stuff or offshore oil exploration/seismology survey work?

Kinda looks like it is or was seismographic work. It could even be fault lines, and yes there are 90 degree fault lines here and there in the world...
Very instering though. There is a big, very deep hole off of Wrightsville Beach.

Where do you find it, I did a "google" for it and came up with nothing. Do you have a link for it?

It looks a whole lot like a sidescan sonar image of an acoustic array. the little bumps could be hydrophones. Lot of that stuff around from the old technology ASW days.

NOT that I know much about that....that I could talk about...

You can find bathymetric maps of the entire US coastal seafloor here: http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/coastal/coastal.html
Just click on the region you're interested in.
