    Post Lets talk safety..personal locators..

with the recent news of a small boat being lost at sea, I have taken a look at my own life and safety. As much as I fish, I don't have personal safety device like a eprib.

First off money is an issue. I was looking into getting the SPOT device. It is attractive to me because it allows you to send a simple message back to shore and you can track your movements using google earth. I could also use it for my hunting trips as well.

Does any one use the SPOT?

I bought one, but have not had a chance to use it offshore yet. but, I turned it on and drove around in the truck all day and when I got home I logged onto the computer and saw where I was all day. The extra $50 per year for the tracking function is very very cool, and being able to hit the "OK" button every so often to send a message to someone's cell phone/e-mail is a pretty cool feature.

At $126 for the unit and $150 per year for the service, I think it is a great deal.

things happen quickly out there. if something should happen suddenly, i dont see the SPOT as a viable option. With the epirb, it will automatically send a distress signal to the coast guard. I know its costly, but safety of yourself and crew is important.

Joey H, just read the thread about the NFL players. It should be all the incentive you need.

I agree with Frank. If things go bad quickly.....the e-pirb is the ticket. The spot function may be great for keeping track but usually things happen when we least expect them too. I think Id rather have the e-pirb so no matter what when she hits the water shes sending out a signal.

Epirb def, can be had for way under 425.00 these days, even the cheap ones can be counted on to save your ass , and they work , just ask the dumb ass who accidentally turned his on in the garage for less than 15 seconds, took less than 4 minutes to receive a call from the US AIR FORCE asking me if i was onboard my vessel.......

To be honest with you..an epirb should be required on all vessels going off-shore. If you can afford a boat..then you can afford an epirb.

Revere is launching a brand new mini-PLB. We saw it at the Miami Show. It is not available on the market yet, but is expected to be a good be less expensive than their current PLB.

EPIRB with GPS is is the best option in my opinion, but adding these PLB's for each person on board, or to be attached to life vests is a great backup.

Problem with SPOT is that it relies on the Globalstar satellite system, which some folks will say is not the best... the PLB/EPIRB's rely on gov't maintained satellites.

Also, SPOT requires a monthly fee and stops transmitting after a certain period of time.

My opinions..., get a true EPIRB/PLB with GPS.

EPRIBS and PLB's from Revere are available from our store and as soon as we are allowed to release pricing information on the new mini-PLB, you can be sure we'lll post it here.
