    I use SPOT

I got the SPOT for Christmas and think it's great. I've wanted an epirb for years and due to cost never got one. I travel 60-75mi offshore Myrtle Beach in a 23'CC and used to make my wife freak. It puts both hers and my mind at ease plus the tracking feature is good for letting your loved ones follow along with your trip. I use mine in the mountians, woods, I think you can't go wrong with it. Bruce

QUOTE=Joey Herring;503443]with the recent news of a small boat being lost at sea, I have taken a look at my own life and safety. As much as I fish, I don't have personal safety device like a eprib.

First off money is an issue. I was looking into getting the SPOT device. It is attractive to me because it allows you to send a simple message back to shore and you can track your movements using google earth. I could also use it for my hunting trips as well.

Does any one use the SPOT?[/QUOTE]

We are working very closely with Revere these days and would be more than happy to put together a group sf.com purchase. Right now, we are coming up with a program for the Somerset, NJ Saltwater Fishing Expo with them. I"m sure I can tag this right along with it.

As far as EPIRB's there is really only one way to go these days and that's with the built in GPS. Most people get the manual release, but they do offer this unit with a hydrostatic release as well. Here is the link to the product on our site.

    Revere EPIRB with GPS

feel free to email with any questions and I'll see what kind of group/show pricing I can get from Revere for everyone on here.

FYI, they have announced a brand new personal locator beacon that is about 1/2 of the size of their current PLB. This is not yet available for purchase, but should be as soon as they get FCC approval shortly. My understanding is that the price point will be significantly lower than the current PLB pricing.

As overunder mentions, only way to do it right is an epirb w/ built in GPS. PLB's are getting better, but most do not transmit well and are intermittent in rough seas, and require you to hold them high...3ft above the water to get a full signal all the time, not something you cna do floating in the water, maybe from a life raft. It surely is better then nothing and if it is all you can afford, it is a good thing to add, but for a few more dollar's, buy the best, we are talking about your life. Also know how your boat is built when shopping for an Epirb, does it have floatation foam or not, some boats won't sink, but will bob on the surface, Epirb's with manual release are for boats that will float, boat's that do not have floatation should have a hydrostatic release, a hydrostatic release needs to be roughly 9-15 ft underwater before it will deploy, so they are worthless on a boat with floatation unless you want to go diving for it and wrestle the release. In the future, PLB's will have better transmission and will be so affordable that everyone should own one, but if you venture offshore, a full blown Epirb is the only good choice right now.

As far as spot goes, I have a few friends with it. It sends messages, but they often are recieved up to an hour after you send them, all depends on location and signal, they transmit better higher up on the water, especially on rougher day's, so for smaller boat's they will not work as well. the nice thing about Spot is for an extra few bucks ontop of the monthly fee you can pay for insurance which coveres some of your search and rescue fees, if your boat insurance does not cover much of that, it cannot hurt to add more for the small fee they want, to me it would be worth it to pay a few bucks more to get it if I had a Spot.

I would highly advise a PLB w/ internal GPS over a spot though, in the long run spot will cost way more, as a back up or secondary unit though it might not be a bad idea, and could be convinient to send messages home.
