    Lets start the teaser debate.

With a hated debate going on about blue marlin lures it made me think of teasers. Who started using them first and what was the reason to not put a hook in them? I guess logic would tell me it was to perfect the bait and switch but was that really the case? The teaser bite is always an extemely agressive bite almost like a sucicide mission. One would think that while blue marlin fishing or most definetly tuna fishing one would put a hook in a bait, spreader bar, chain, lure or whatever in that teaser position with a release clip to a 50w instead or a senator teaser reel. Any thoughts?

Almost always I have hooks in anything behind the boat... That does not mean I don't go teaser crazy once in a while. As much as I love dredges (mullet or stripteaser) its hard some days to be a plain ol squid daisy. In fact, Bill, one of my favorites that gets a lot of play time from me is one of yours... If I had two I'd drag two but at least that one gets the Deep nod.
Island side there are too many teeth to splash anything expensive so I usually go with a skirted beer can or other home made device... Bowling pin types also get the thumbs up from me if the toothies aren't too big.

Dredge on right or dredge on the left or both or a dredge somewhere, bowlin pins in dolphin colors from time to time. Bill I like to add hooks to your goodies I like the suicide thing when they come in on them

For smaller billfish, a natural mullet dredge hands-down. For straight blue marlin trolling, I always have a Brizilliano running from my bridge along with a senior wide range

Like I've posted in the past, the ole' faithful Ilander daisy chain w/ a hookless horse ballyhoo is my favorite teaser. I do want to try one of Bill's Rasta chains w/ a Moldcraft Super Chugger in the back though. Gotta save up some money and get me one.

not really asking for favorites although it is interesting to read. I am more asking the history of teasers. Who was the first documented to pull a hookless bait and why?

I think I remember reading somewhere that the early fly fishermen that first started targeting sails, marlin, etc. started the idea. From what I heard, it was ultimately the start of "Bait and Switch". Just not as organized and fluent as it is now. Mostly bonito and dolphin belly on feathers was the teaser of choice. I may not be correct, but like I said......that's the way I heard it.
