Someone once told me they originated in Hawaii. They were using a lure similar to the boone teaser, but the hair on them was made of cotton. The lures were super effective at raising billfish and were creating intense strikes. The cotton on the lure would wrap around the bill of the fish and people were pulling in billfish that weren't even hooked. The billfish were just snared by the lure like velcro. It was so effective at snaring the fish at the strike that they stopped putting hooks in the lures and obtained an almost 100% catch rate on the billfish. The IGFA banned the lure and the billfisheman began pulling the lures only to raise the lit up fish. It was then quickly pulled away and drop back hook bait was presented to the fish. The new way of teasing a billfish into a strike, by a banned lure, was allowed by the IGFA and became common practice. Don't know if it is true or not, it's just what I was told.

Blue Marlin fishing--I don't pull 'em. lose too many opportunities (and some tackle) when they get piled on by a blue one.

whitey, sailfish, stripeys, etc.....its been covered. Islander daisy chains, Dredges, stripteasers (great option, they work well), squid chains w/islander/hoo trailer, etc....

history--don't know. not really into the history, politics, IGFA, and "I know Capt. Blowhard, who landed the first 7 lb slippery dick on 2 oz gear", whatever....

The combed out nylon snagging lure, called a mop, may or may not have been develpoed as a teaser, but it definitely did not need a hook. And is not IGFA approved. I had a very well respected Captain in Kona tell me that properly done, fishing with a mop allowed a more clean and friendly release of marlin. I don't think I aggree with him because the strands left on the bill will allow for stuff to start growing there that shouldn't. My opinion, don't use mops.

Blue Marlin fishing, other than bait and switch, I see no need for teasers.

Whitey, Stripey and Mr. Saildog on the other hand are very attracted to big stuff, yet very hard to hook on big stuff. That is why you don't put hooks in teasers (big stuff). Raise them to the big stuff with a hook in it, and you just might sting them and scare them away. Raise them to the big stuff without a hook in it, give them little stuff with a hook in it, and then you can take your pictures, place your tag, do what you will with them.

I was just reading a about zane grey and apparently someone gives him credit for inventing the teaser in the 1920s or 30s off new zeland, no clue if this is right or not but im just repeating information.

teasers make sense to me, when i get teased i pursue more
