August 20 and 21.
Green Harbor Tuna Club goes to Cuttyhunk Island for it's Offshore "overnighter" Inv.. every year
I've had the pleasure of fishing this in the past, and got the invite to join Cappy Frank Papp on the "Fortunate"... Both Frank and I have placed high in the standings over the past decade + (different boats) , but haven't scored top honors... until now
The Bite was slow the first day at Hydro and Welkers canyon's, after boating some small YFT (Piper #12 White ) with one kicker keeper YFT (spreader bar), we headed northeast to Oceanographers canyon to see if that was any better.... ditto ....a few more football undersized YFT and peanut Mahi's (Piper Again....
After a few chit chat's with other boats, we felt pretty good about the keeper YFT in the box, cause nothing was happening west of us the first day... Cool beans
After a non-exsistence night bite chunking, the drift was 1 knot from the east wall to the SW wall , couldn't have asked for a better drift, SOB! Nothing at all, very few squid around the lites too..
Anyhoo..
We started the trek off the west wall to the flats (50-60 fathon curve) before day lite, set a 6 lines out in the dark for the troll heading west towards home .. at sunrise , noticed the spread looked OK... cool... two guys sleeping and 2 transferring fuel, and myself driving
the bus
Really luv fishing with Frank, layed back, great karma, no-worries... felt bad that he was below doing the dirty deed for the transfer, Hot as hell. brother .. ;(
Around 6:30 am the LR "Piper" gets wacked and it's a small marlin hookup doing a dance, hit the AP , dropped the rev's down to 5 knots ; off the helm i go screaming marlin...marlin... LOL .... Cappy Say playing angler for a changethank god it wasn't a big blue
lol
The crew was now up and clearing the spread, did a few over and under moves / gigs, all in all no-worries and we had the release in 10 mins, nice little 50# whitey.... ya baby ... game on
The next few mahi and YFT also fell to the #12 White Piper sporting a Quickrig 9/0 Hays Hook
Was up in the tower with Frank later that morning with a H_K in handWe're all having a blast, sea's were calm, life was good, looking for fish , said to Frank i better start watching the spread again, as soon as i turn my attention to the spread, another whitey pop's up on the Lunch Teaser (Black Bart) , told Brain to grab the #5 Rod with a skipping Hoo and slip it over to the teaser, it switch off like ya read about , had a never ever marlin guy hooked up to his 1st marlin..... way cool.. it was text book stuff; marlin lite-up, swimming back and forth on the hoo, what a hoot... (that never gets old brothers), dropped it back on a going away bite... SWEET!.... He setup on it like a PRO! Got the release in another 10 mins or so.... this one was big, maybe pushing 80#'s... 2 for 2 on Marlin!
We picked off a few more Piper Mahi and headed back to the barn, while heading west, we found out that another boat had a whitey release ; but we were the only ones with the keeper YFT....
1st place
My Thanks to Frank and the rest of the crew for a job well done ...
CatchemUp on Pipers!
