    LEGASEA report OCMD 8/12

We had a fun day on Saturday. Had 3 guys on board who have never caught a billfish and thats what we went for. We started the day about 3 miles south of the 461 and got covered up with skippies before I had the spread set.

Once we got set back up after the skippies we had a decent yft bite and then missed a single white who of course came up on my bigeye bait and then dissappeared.

Once we got settled back in, all hell broke loose as we got covered up by whites and had 4 hooked up. Ended up 1-4 as there were backlashes on 2 different reels and jumped one off right at the back of the boat. With a more experienced crew we def could have caught more, but seeing these guys eyes as big as half dollars made every backlash worth while

We ended up picking up and running about another 12 miles south once I heard there was a bite in the 690-700 line area about 500 fathoms. We didnt get a sniff and moved inshore a bit. About 200 fa. we had 2 white come into the spread and ended up picking one off the teaser.

We ended the day 2-7 on whites and a nice yft for the grill See yall back out there next weekend for Poor Girls!

David Here John we could only hear ya broken at times trying to figure out your location .We had a BM in the spread but would not eat,a big smash that brought the 80 ft down planer rod and some kind of fish crashing into the LR chain for a nice cluster f./..A skippy .Tried bailing on 12 or so Balls but the WMO must have picked em clean.Tried DD;n but Nuttin there stopped on a wreck inshore but the Lab was Howling and 24 oz would not hold bottom...Great work you and crew.

Thanks David...Im not sure with the range on my radio as it varies greatly...sometimes I can be talking to guys 30 miles away and other days i have trouble talking to people 5 miles...who knows????

I will tell you that I have not caught ANY mahi off the pots this year. I have had the debate with a bunch of people, but they just dont seem to be around. We passed some even before the sun cracked the horizon so I know we were the first ones there and no one home... (try winter quarter shoal)

Its funny how mentality changes. A few years back I would have been furious missing those fish, but now I really get my enjoyment watching friends have those first moments offshore and you just know they're hooked
