    Leader for Marlin?

This year I plan on doing a lot more marlin fishing. I have my TLD 25’s and new rods. Learn how to rig my baits with circle hooks. Now the only thing I’ am not sure on is leader size. What are the pros using for leader for white’s and blue’s. I use Jinkai in 100# 150# and 200# for meat fishing.

80 pound fluorocarbon is a great leader for whites and sails. the thinner line lets a bait swim better on a circle hook and fluoro is a lot more abrasion resistant than mono. you'll have to change your leader after almost every fish but who cares. for blues it is a different story. not that you can't catch them with tld25s, there have certainly been a lot caught that way, but you will do much better using something heavier. very easy to get spooled and have your tackle busted that way. i would fish at least 200# leader whether you are pulling dead bait or lures, if you are strictly targeting blues, even heavier if there are big fish around.

I wasn’t planning on using the TLD’s for my blue marlin baits. I have a set of 50’s and 70’s for that.

    Big Blues

Momoi Marlin Hard Mono Leader is widely used around the world for big Marlin leader material. It has very high breaking strength and high abrasion resistance. For Big Marlin and tournament fishing go with 500-650Lb Leader.

90 flourocarbon for whites and sails, and 300 for blues. during a tourney 90 should benough to land a winning whitety. mayb a little heavier for blues during a tournament. 400 maybe

80# hard mono for whites (you don't need fluoro IMO, waste of $), 400-500# hard mono for blues.

Im using 80lb Momoi for my naked baits and 100 on my strips. 550 extra hard for my big stuff. On occasion I will use #19 wire. I dont like floro on my naked baits I think with the stiffer leader it takes away from the action of the bait.

The only problem with 80 is chaffing off

I've always used 80 Jinkia, but over the last couple of seasons, I chaffed a few off, so I've moved up to the 100 lb. I don't think it's had an effect on the action of the bait, and when a tuna hits, you can turn up the heat a little.
Blues, I use 200#. Remember, with a lot of leader material, most all of them having much higher breaking strength then they are rated at.
