I like 80 on the white marlin baits. Now that we have to switch over to circle hooks I might experiment with 60lb leaders on slow days. Since the fish will be hooked in the corner of the jaw you you won't have to worry about chaffing as much. Blue Marlin baits get 400lb.

Did it chafe thru or did the wireman put to much pressure on the leader?

on the wrong boat and you will not fish with that particular captain again. gotta know when to be easy with a fish that has been rubbing the leader the entire fight. I think i've been guilty of that more with wahoo than anything else, but still to loose a fish boatside sucks for any reason.

    alright you want the truth?

125 lb jinkai! thats it. i remember a capt giving perfect score a ton of shiiiiiiii for not fishing 80 lb. he fished on my boat and was really concerned. alex, we need to switch. ok, i did. and the next trip we lost the first 5 tuna at the boat, on the leader.......break offs. too light. finally had about 7 tuna but i went back and redid everything. i went to 125 lb. next time out we ran to the south poormans...............fished right off the back of that 47 gwantley and pulled 3 whites out from under mr 80 lb leader. i never paid any attention to him again. i have caught blues and whites on 125 pound jinkai as well as anyone. after a blue the leader is shot but so what....... i have never lost a marlin due to chafe, but then again i have never gut hooked one. you need to be at the rod. fishing for me is no fun without the risk of losing. even my blue marlin lures only have 250 lb leader. my hooks are smaller than most and i love it that way. jmo, but im right. if i ever hook a grander, it will be fun watching him go to the horizon and break off. i dont need a trophy any more. alex.

Sails 40-50... Whites I almost always use 80 but will use 60 on smaller baits/ hooks and 100 if I'm running combo. On samllish blues I go to 200. My small lure baits get 300, mediums get 400... Almost all of that is Sufix material.

I do go to hard shell 220 or 500 on the lures from time to time. Somebody just gave me a couple coils of "platinum" 150 ... Way small diameter. May slide in and replace the 200 I have been running in the one slot...
